Centerpiece help please!

I need simple centerpieces, since we are serving family style and need room on the tables for platters. I picked up all this glassware, and about 132 votive holders, which are actually ikea juice glasses, at a garage sale run by a local rental company:

After a trip to Joann's and 2 trips to Michaels this afternoon, this is what I came up with. Each table will have one tall pedestal candle holder, wrapped in printed vellum and purple ribbon, which will also serve as the table number. It will be surrounded by the votive holders (6-8 per table):

I lit the candles, so we could see what it looks like, and I really like it:

So here are the questions:
1- Do you prefer the crystals in the votives (left) or the pearls (right)? They are both colored purple, even though they look brown in the pic.

2- FI doesn't like the pearl garland. He says that pearl and silver don't go with ivory and purple. Um. Ok. I feel like I need something in that space to create some sort of interest. I think that the candlelight reflecting on the pearls is very pretty. What do you think?

3- Would it look better if I found a plain ivory strand of pearls and wrapped the bottom of the pedestal with it?

4- There is a seam on the back of the pedestal because I wrapped it with vellum and ribbon. FI wants me to cover the seam with ribbon, but I think that would just call more attention to it. Thoughts?

Re: Centerpiece help please!

  • I love them just like they are.  I agree... more ribbon will just draw attention to the vellum.  How are you adding table numbers? can you apply the number over the seam?
  • I'm going to print them on the vellum before I put it on the pedestal. This is just my prototype.

If I could find some die-cut decals, that would make it easier for me, and I could possibly apply one over the seam. Now to search for those..

  • 1) I like the one on the left better. Something about the crystals not being so round appeals to me.

    2) I'm guessing by garland you mean the thing wrapped around the pedestal.. I don't see a problem with it, but I can't see very well in the picture.

    3) Don't worry about the seam.
  • These look really good!  I'm impressed by your creativity.  I like the crystals way better than the round pearl-things.
  • I much prefer the crystals and I think they're super cute!
  • I told FI that you ladies didn't have an issue with the pearl garland stuff, and he said. "Well, its your wedding. It can be as tacky as you want it to be." He was halfway joking, but really, does it look tacky?

  • By the garland you mean wrapped around the candle stand right? I think it's beautiful!
  • Yes, Katie, that's what I meant. I'm glad you like it too. Especially because I already bought another package of it.

  • I like the ones on the right, but I think its because I have them in vases in my house right now!

I love the pearl accent.  But can you show us what it will look like without it?  For some reason I always think pearls classy up things.  (sorry I know 'classy up' is not a verb but whatevs)
