Re: What's your favorite holiday food?

  • Hey Anna, when you move to DC, could I just hire you to be my chef?

Nope.  But you could come over and help me eat the excessive amounts of food I make.
  • You know Anna, we're practically nieghbors. Just sayin.

  • Anna,
FB just gave me the option to RSVP to Thanksgiving at your house. You might not want to make it a public event unless you want me there. Just sayin'.,,

My 19 year old brother brought soda for Christmas once.  Luckily, I know he's a twit so was prepared.  He brought 3 different flavors of Mountain Dew

Agreed.  We just do butter and table sugar.  I'll hav to remember to pick some up from the church bazaar.  I'm too lazy to rice potatoes this year for homemade.  Seeing as i got the recipe from the little old lutheran church ladies, i'll just buy from them.  ;)
  • I have read none of this thread anna - but my mom has a ridiculously awesome sweet potato bake recipe that is TO DIE FOR - seriously, it tastes more like a dessert than a side dish.

She also has an excellent corn suffle recipe.

Let me know if youre interested!

My brother had me bring soda once, so I got all the staples and got to his house to discover he was all stocked up; my soda was never touched.  But EVERY.OTHER.TIME. he has grape soda and beer exclusively.  WTF.
  • Roxy- Agreed. Can we add FloggingMolly to that list please?
And if you listen to Kill Hannah, the deal is off. :P

  • I love flogging molly and I've never heard of Kill Hannah!

  • Ooh, can I come to this party too!? All of this sounds amazing. (and roxy, I'm just now getting into Metric, so I approve your playlist!) =)

We're doing two thanksgivings as usual. We go to my mom's first around 1, and then his fam wherever they are later in the evening, like around 4 or 5. I can't wait. I love thanksgiving food!

Our traditional t-day at my mom's is southern-style since she's from Georgia. Almost everything has pork in it

    Turkey (or sometimes chicken)
    collard greens w/hamhock
    corn bread dressing
    corn bread
    macaroni and cheese
    sometimes candied yams
cranberry sauce from a can--I won't eat it any other way! (well I would, but it's preferred)
Dessert--apple pie  or cherry and I'm making sweetpotato pie (WAY better than pumpkin I think)

oh man I need to go eat dinner

That's what I go for when making mine. I sear the sweet potato chunks and then caramelize with a gripload of butter and brown sugar.. my sister and mom love toasted marshmallow on top. but SERIOUSLY  I'd love your mom forever if i could peek at her recipe.  Like totally.

I csn't find her sweet potato recipe right now - but this is her squash recipe.  It's kinda the same concept though - and THIS IS EXCELLENT.

When I find the sweet potato one I'll send it your way too

    Filling:
    3 cups mashed squash
    1/2 cup brown sugar
    2/3 stick butter
    2 tsp vanilla (divided)
    2 eggs well beaten

    Topping:
    1/3 cup brown sugar
    1/2 stick butter
    1/3 cup flour
    1/2 cup pecans

Combine squash, sugar, butter and 1 tsp vanilla. Beat together the eggs and other tsp vanilla. Combine with squash mixture. Put in greased casserole dish. Using a fork, mix brown sugar, butter, flour and pecans for topping. Sprinkle evenly over casserole.

Bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees.

    Serves 8!

  • Ooh yea, my grandma makes an awesome corn thing. It's corn with corn flakes on top! To die for!

  • Anna- I'll email her for the recipe. It's truly amazing. And SUPER easy to make.
  • Ok, I just searched my email because I figured I've probably asked her for it before.

Pretty sure this is it and sometimes, instead of crackers for the topping she uses Corn Flakes.

    SCALLOPED CORN

1 PKG FROZEN WHOLE KERNEL CORN, COOKED AND DRAINED OR 1 CAN (16) OZ WHOLE KERNEL CORN, DRAINED.  I ALWAYS HAVE USED THE CANNED CORN.
1 SMALL ONION, CHOPPED (ABOUT 1/4 CUP)
    1/2 SMALL GREEN PEPPER, CHOPPED
    2 TABLESPOONS MARGARINE OR BUTTER
    2 T. FLOUR
    1 TEASPOON SALT
    1/2 TEASPOON PAPRIKA
    1/4 TEASPOON DRY MUSTARD
    DASH OF PEPPER
    1/4 CUP MILK
    1 EGG, SLIGHtLY BEATEN
    1/3 CUP CRACKER CRUMBS
1 T. MARGARINE OR BUTTER, MELTED

Cook and stir onion and green pepper in 2 T.butter until onion is tender, remove from heat.  Sit in flour, salt, paprika, mustard, & pepper.  Cook over low heat, stirrring constantly, until mixture is bubbly, remove from heat.  Stir in milk gradually.  Heat to boiling, stirring constantly.  Boil and stir 1 minute.  Stir in corn and egg.  Pour into ungreased 1 qt casserole.
Mix crumbs and 1 T. melted butter, sprinkle over corn.  Cook uncovered in 350 degree oven till bubble, 30 to 35 min.  Makes 4 servings

    Sorry it's in cap's. I just C&p'd
