Is a DJ for a ceremony tacky?

I love the idea of live music, but any live music in my area is around $600.. .CRAZY!

Anyway, to get my DJ to play songs during my ceremony is only $200. I'm for sure leaning towards the DJ but I am wondering if that looks tacky...

What do you think?

I would want the typical music like Canon in D etc..

Re: Is a DJ for a ceremony tacky?

  • Oh gosh, I hope not...cuz thats what I am doing.
I updated my bio on 06/24/10, however if you want to see my planning bio you have to go to www.lizardlipsplanningbio.weebly.com because I am having a hard time making it clicky!
  • No not at all. I've been to weddings that had them. I had considered it but we're on a budget. An alternative is hooking up an ipod up to speakers and playing it. It wouldn't take up much space, it could be hidden, it wouldn't cost anything if you or someone you know has one, and you can play whatever kind of music you want. It could be personalized.

  • $600 is a lot for a band?  Around here, DJs start at $600 and bands start around $2500.

To answer your question, no, it's not tacky.  And as long as your DJ isn't making cheesy announcements during the ceremony, your guests won't think anything of it.

Tacky must be the most overused word on these boards.
  • I think as long as the presentation of the music reflects you and your fiance, there's absolutely nothing wrong with having a DJ play the music during your wedding.

  • I don't think its tacky at all but have you tried gigmasters.com?  That's where I found my ceremony/cocktail hour musicians.
  • Only if your DJ is a baby.

There has been a DJ for the ceremony at practically every wedding I've been to. Including mine.

Canon in D is so played out.

For some reason I feel like 200$ is a waste of money for ceremony music of any kind, but I had my wedding on a porch without music so what do I know.
  • I hope not either. That's what we planned on doing. We have no other choice than a DJ or a guest-led kazoo ensemble.

  • The weddings I've been to have all had d.j's at ceremony, sounded perfect in my ears.... !

We're going with d.j, there wasn't even a thought of anything else.
  • My DJ is playing at my ceremony.  He also plays live sax, which he will be doing during cocktail hour and dinner, and offered to do that during the ceremony, but I want particular music that he wouldn't be able to play so he's going to DJ it instead.

  • Our DJ did our ceremony too, we had very traditional music, and he was pretty invisible, I don't think it's tacky.
  • I don't think so at all; that is what we are doing!  Live music was first choice, but just not where I wanted to spend money. DJ's know how to handle it and yes, as long as your's is good, you're set.
