Work problems (I never seem to have a shortage of them)

So I just got back from vacation to find a calendar saying that I'll be at the other office on Mondays (possibly Tuesdays), Wednesdays and Thursdays. I typically just go there on Thur. to cover for my manager since that's her day off.

So no one has asked me about changing my schedule or discussed it with me or anything until just a couple minutes ago when my sucky manager IM's me to make sure I got it. I just said yes, I did.

Well, I don't want to change my schedule. I have a desk job, I need to be at MY desk to efficiently do my job. Its near impossible to do the big projects I do when I'm flip flopping between offices.

I'm going to speak to my boss on Monday (when my manager is gone, because if she's around she will make it worse. Besides, she doesn't listen) and tell her that I...don't want to change my schedule....?

I chose to work at this location and even used this location as a deciding factor for me moving further away. If I had known they'd force me to work at the North location I wouldn't have moved further away from that area...

Basically I wanted to vent but I'd appreciate input and suggestions?

Re: Work problems (I never seem to have a shortage of them)

  • You are totally within your rights to say that you can't/ won't work at the other office. "I applied to work at X location because it works for my schedule. I cannot work at Y location due to travel time, not having my computer, etc."

Focus on the impact the schedule shift will have on your ability do efficiently do your job. That's all I've got. Sorry for the work suckiness.

ETA: I mean focus on the above when you are speaking with your boss. Sorry if that was lamely unclear.

  • While they may just tell you "tough shiit" I would still talk to your boss about it. A good manager/boss would've discussed this change with you beforehand...way beforehand, so that you would have time to make arrangements etc. Its unprofessional on their part to make what seems like a large change so abruptly. Do they know that it will be difficult for you to complete your work if you are shuffling from one place to another? Go in to talk to your boss with a calm and professional demeanor and state your issues and see what they can do to resolve them. Good luck!
  • Oh, and the reason for this weirdo change? So my manager can work at my office (I'll be working at hers) because the other girl who works up there with her complained that she never does any work and she's not helpful (which is true) so hey, lets push her on another office and disrupt everyone, that makes sense.

  • Thanks girls, I kind of wanted to make sure I'm not being ridiculous or out of line. You would just think this is something your employer would discuss with you.
  • Ditto PPs.  Focus on the impact that it will have on your ability to do your job.  If you can show that it will cost them money in any way, I would add that.

My boss is under the impression that I can do my prjects anywhere, that I can just carry all the papers with me and do them, I've explained that I can't but she doesn't seem to get it (or listen, or care or all of the above).
If I go to that office that much it'll cost me an extra tank of gas a week, which is not a finacial burden I want to bear.
  • You're totally not being unreasonable, and that sucks.  I know my colleagues are really perturbed when they move offices and can't do their billing, referral letters, and phone calls to patients properly.  Also, the way they told you (just on the calendar) is inappropriate.  How long have you been at this job?
  • Jackie- I've been there for 2 1/2 years. I pride myself in knowing our patients and whether they go to my office or not and when I'm going to several offices I get patients confused :(
