What's the coolest thing you've done? AW it here

What's something cool/unique/unexpected you've done?  Or someplace cool that you've visited?

Mine:  I went sky-diving and I watched an autopsy (like, I was right there in the autopsy room).

If Missy has something cooler than swimming with the dolphins, I want her life.

  • I got to give the opening speech at an Obama rally. It may or may not be the highlight of my life.

  • Huh, I feel really lame.  I'm going to have to think about this.
  • I can't really think of anything but since you mentioned it, I've gone swimming with dolphins as well and its amazing. I also swam with sting rays which was cool.

2 things that are semi-cool compared to what others have done, but were really cool to me:

    * I went to Australia for a week as part of a high school all-star cheerleading squad. that was cool.

    * I signed the national anthem for my university's convocation in January. it's part of a large system and was broadcast all over the state of Texas to various branch campuses. I had an immediate audience of about 300-400 including the president of the university, the chancellor for the system, and the mayors of both towns the university is in, and a statewide audience of about... 1000? 2000? very nerve-wracking. and painful considering I had a broken foot that was diagnosed the day before.

  • Y'know, I can't think of anything REALLY cool.

I went to Barcelona and saw the entire city from a cliff. THAT was beautiful and really cool.

Jealous!  To piggyback on this, FI planned a surprise date to a rally when we were still LDR and I came out to visit him.  It wasn't such a big deal, but realizing we share so many of the same ideals was awesome.
Other than that, I swam in a bay in Puerto Rico with these luminescent algae that light up at night.
And maybe study abroad in Spain.  That was definitely awesome.

    Wow, that IS cool!
Heels, it took me awhile to think of mine.  I know we have dolphin-swimmers, mountain-climbers, and triathletes on the board, though, so I want people to share their cool experiences.  Also, it could be something like "I am a Big Sister volunteer" or "I spent a summer at Habitat for Humanity."  I'm curious about people on here.

My family and I hiked the Grand Canyon - the trail down was 7 miles, the trail up was 10 miles.  We broke up the trip by staying at a small resort at the bottom.

It was the most physically ridiculous thing I've done in my life and I could barely walk for a day or two after the trip - but it was totally worth it and I'd totally do it again.

ETA - For work I got to go to a Hillary Clinton/ Barack Obama event, but my favorite thing ever was when I got to meet Ted Sorensen.  He was JFK's speech writer and is the last living member of JFK's entourage.  He wasn't going to do any private interviews, but a contact I had on the inside who likes me got me in anyway - and I got to interview Ted, alone, in his hotel room.  He's almost completely blind and my contact told me on the elevator on the way up to his room that Ted asked "Is she good lookin?" before leaving to come get me.  Ha!  I still have the entire recording from the interview - by far my favorite experience at work EVAR.

  • I met my biological family for the first time 10 years ago.

    I've lost 120 pounds.
  • I swam with dolphins too!  I actually got to hang out with Flipper's daughter.  It was really awesome.

I hiked the Grand Canyon about halfway down and back up--it was really amazing (I know it doesn't sound that awesome, but it really was) and FI and I plan to go back and do an overnight hike all the way down to the river and back up.

I hiked an active volcano in Hawaii.

  • This is an uber dork one but I presented one of my archaeological reports at an annual BIG conference and afterwards I had a bunch of people come up to say how great of a job I did and how ground breaking the work was. Many were professors I had or people I had worked with but there were a few whose names I remembered but couldn't figure out why...Yeah, they were the ones who wrote the archaeology textbooks and case studies I'd be reading all year! OMG.
  • This isn't the coolest thing I've ever done, but it's the coolest thing I've done recently....

  • Ooh I got one.  I spent a summer in high school in the mountains of NC and TN fixing homes for people who couldn't afford repairs (not that I was particularly useful at the age of 15, or even now, lol).  We met the coolest people.  One lady was 90 and her husband had just left her.  At 90!  She was German and moved here to be with her husband and she had never worked.  Her home had no toilets.  Frown  We fixed her roof, painted, and cut firewood for the winter.  She was so kind and she was hilarious.  I wish I could remember her stories.  She made the best tea.

I couldn't believe people lived like that just an hour from my home.  It was a real eye opener.

  • In December, I'm going to be a published designer.
  • We did an 11 mile hike in Kauai. It was absolutley beautiful, and we'd never see the sights we did unless you hike, or boat in.
Although we cpuldnt walk the next day, we got up and snorkeled, then took a helicopter over the exact same spot we hiked.

Oh, I know!  In elementary school I was in a choir that tried out to be in Joesph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat.  We made it to the semi finals and got to sing on stage at one of the big theatres in Toronto.

We didn't get to meet Donny Osmond, but it was still really neat.  It's the theatre that showed Phantom for ever.

  • I haven't done too many cool things, but one of my best friends has her pilot's licence.  Her dad owns a little 4 person plane, so she can just go fly around whenever she wants!
    image
  • I've swan with dolphin on our trip to the Bahamas too. I am planning a surprise trip to the home country of my mom and grandma. I am taking my grandma with me. I have never been there and she hasb't been back in almost 20 years. She doesn't know yet.
  • Heels- That is really amazing. :)

Jelenny- You're an animal rescuer? Thank you. That makes my heart happy.

  • I climbed to the top of St. Paul's Cathedral in London and got to see the city from the top--that was pretty awesome.  I also walked across the crosswalk in front of Abbey Road studios:

I also met Jonathon Groff when he was in Spring Awakening on Broadway--I saw the original cast (including Lea Michele!) in New York a couple months after it opened--he's so cute! On that same NYC trip, I also saw a dress rehearsal for SNL that Molly Shannon was hosting, and I got moved up to the front of the balcony to fill a seat for some semi-important person who had to leave.  It was pretty awesome!

(Sorry for being a PIP AW)

  • Heels--that's really cool that you did that at 15.  I'm talking to my 13 year old girl about doing some volunteer work like that.  Were you with an organization?

Maratea--congrats in advance on being published!

Katie--how exciting, swimming with the big archeological fish, so as to speak.  Not uber-dorky at all!

  • Wow!  You girls have lived such amazing lives so far! I have to get on top of my bucket list.
  • In 11th grade bio, I dissected a moose heart that was about twice the size of my head. That was pretty freaking cool.
