Re: What month does the weather

  • Never...ever...

I don't even know anymore with VA. I think it also depends on what you call cooling off. Normally it gets bearable around early October, but doesnt' get cold until...maybe mid Novemberish? Lately we've had fairly warm Christmases (50's) and then freak cold snaps and major snow storms from Feb-March.
  • Never.

In seriousness, December?  Late November?  I distinctly remember several Halloweens trick-or-treating as a sweaty princess.
  • If we're lucky we have Indian Summer and it stays nice during the day into mid-October.

It's not unusual to have a blizzard on Hallowe'en here. Here being 2 hours north of Toronto. I'm near a lot of lakes, so we end up getting a ton of snow. It is fantastic for the 3 months we have warm weather though.

ETA: Usually anyways. I remember two years ago wearing a tank top on Nov 1st, and this May was exceptionally warm.

I don't know about last fall (I was in Oklahoma with my FI at the time), but I do remember my parents talking about how it was really clear until like the week before Christmas or something when they had a HUGE blizzard, had to call in the army and everything to get it all cleared out.
  • Anywhere from early October to mid-November. WHen I looked at the almanac for our wedding day (11/27), it could be either 40 or 80 or anywhere in between. That time of year, it is usually cold one day and hot the next. Very confusing.

  • It starts getting chilly at night in late August here, and the days get cool in September. There's a bike ride (bike 4-8 miles, stop at a bar, wait a couple of hours bike 4-8 miles to the next bar) at the end of August and we camp out that night, and I'm usually in sweatpants and a sweatshirt, bundled up in a blanket on the bus (or in pants, sweatshirt, earband, etc - whatever I can safely wear biking and be warm if I ride the last leg).
We had our first snowfall (granted, only 1/2 an inch and it was gone by the end of the day) around October 20th last year. We had several (3?) inches at the end of November and it DIDNT.GO.AWAY. until March. Three blizzards.

The year before, it snowed Thanksgiving Sunday, about 4 inches.

I think thats the one, I forget when exactly it was but the lake effect off georgian bay dropped something like 7 ft in some areas. It looked like an absolute mess.

Yup. I'm in Muskoka, we're maybe 40 minutes from Georgian Bay? And with several lakes of our own in the area. I don't remember ever having a winter where we didn't have at LEAST 3 feet of snowfall. My last year of high school we had a total of 15 snow days over the course of 4 months, and it takes a lot to make them call it around here.

I live between lake ontario and erie and the escarpment sort of "protects" us from lots of snow. We didnt get any snow here after the beginning of january this past year. None. Sometimes im jealous of all the snow you guys get up there.
  • We usually start getting snow in late September.  Our summers are great, but too short.

It'd be awesome if you didn't have to drive everywhere here. I'm 20 minutes away from the nearest town, and if our driveway doesn't get plowed, we're SOL. Even if it is, they just sand the backroads, so it's perilous until you hit the highway, and then it's only slightly less slippery. Lol.

I have made some wicked awesome snow forts though.

I dont think we have even gotten enough snow in the past 2 years to make a snow man, let a lone a snow FORT. The driving would suck but the forts and snow ball fights would be so worth it.
  • Oh, those 3 inches weren't all we had. By the end of the season, we had 69 inches of snow total. Our front yard had probably 16-20 inches of snow pack, and the corners of our driveway from snow plows and snowblowing, were 6-7 feet tall.
Two record winters in a row. J left a lot out when he sold me on moving to Iowa.......

Yeah, there's nothing like spending 3 days making quinzhees (like an igloo but instead of stacking blocks, you pile snow up and let it freeze over, then hollow it out) and having an epic 20 person snow ball fight. Then going inside soaking wet for some hot chocolate and realizing your 7 year old brother wasn't there because he got stuck in a snowbank 40 minutes ago and no one noticed.

I still feel bad about that...

  • Our snow's too cold to make snowballs or snowmen. I'm sad :(
Well, technically, the air's too cold. But, it's some of the prettiest snow I've seen. It sparkles at night. I do love it when it snows - it's so quiet, and it makes everything so clean-looking.

Hahaha all I can picture is that kid from a christmas story unable to move his arms and falling over in the snow.

Oooh yeah. I love that too. One of the things I love about living in the middle of nowhere is that the sky is really clear, and the amount of stars you can see at night is spectacular. I <3 the way snow sparkles in the moon/starlight.
  • Normally we're lucky to get over 3 inches here, but last year we got snow fuucked. I think we got 45" of snow the first storm, 50" of snow the second storm and multipe snow storms with "only" 10" that piled on top of whatever snow was still there. We were pretty much shut down for the entire month of February.

Most of the time, the weather is the same around here.  There are words that meterologists use to describe rain.

    light rain
    misty rain
    drizzling
    scattered showers
    heavy rain
    raining steadily
    omg swim!

Then it ranges from warm-ish to cold-ish, to cold.

ETA:  All that blue sky at the olympics was a lie.  We had it photoshopped in.
  • I'm from PA but now live in VA Beach.  I don't put my winter coat on till I go home for Thanksgiving.  We have random 70 degree days during the winter but if it does snow at all everything comes to a stop because the city doesn't have the resources to deal with it.

  • It's really hard to say.  I've had years where I have worn shorts trick-or-treating with my daughter and have still been hot, and other years where I had to wear a freaking parka to keep warm.

One year it was over 70 degrees on Thanksgiving day.  There are pictures of us in short sleeves.
