Prank phone calls... wwyd

So this morning I was awoke by a prank phone call.  It was a number I didn't recognize and after I said, "Hello?" the person on the other line just said "YOU WILL DIE TODAY!" And hung up.

I texted them and asked them who the hell they were?  When I got no answer, I thought I'd scare them a little and texted again: "Thanks to caller ID, I have your number.  A simple internet search can produce your name.  I'm going to call the police.  Have a great day!"

Ordinarily I brush off wrong numbers or prank phone calls... but telling someone they're going to die?  What would you do?

  • In that case I'd call the cops.  Normal prank calls don't bother me, but that could be a threat.  I woudln't take the chance.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • Even if you don't call the police, I would search the phone number just in case it happens again, you don't have to waste time figuring out who it is.

Is it a local number?  Probably just a prank, but if you PM me the number I can check a few sources i use.
  • That's a little scary.  Prank calls are annoying, but someone actually saying you are going to die is too much.  I think I'd call the cops and at least report the number.

I would say if you got the same call again, do what is in bold.
  • I'd probably 1. tell H, while partially freaking out/getting pissed.
    2. Consider letting the police know and see if there's anything they can do, maybe have that number blocked from calling or texting you?

If it came from a cell phone, those usually won't show a name if you do a search on the internet.
  • Well, I've actually done a search on the number.  I could not find a name, but it is a local number, and I have called the local police about it.  They are either going to call me or come by later today.

I honestly do think it's some kid with a cell phone who dialed a random number and thought he was being funny - but yeah, I feel like, whoever it is needs to know that they can't be making random calls with death threats in them.

  • Considering you also work in politics and today is election day, you should probably be extra cautious and call the cops.
  • I like what you did.  411.com has a reverse number search.  That goes beyond a prank - it's a threat.

I would sign them up for every last thing that adds $9.99 to their monthly bill.  Those horoscopes, ringers, etc.
  • Yeah. It's a threat, and not a prank at this point.  Glad you called the cops!  If nothing else, you'll scare the sh.t out of some teenager.
  • It sounds like some one, aged 12, watched the Ring over Halloween weekend. Totally not cool, but I don't think you need to worry.

    Exactly.

  • That would probably really freak me out. I'd report the number. Are the cops going to check out the number?
  • Okay, well, I just got a phone call back from the police.  The officer was really nice :) He asked me if I truly felt threatened - and I told him the truth, which is no.  I really do believe it was a prank and that no one actually wants to kill me.  But he said what he's going to do is call the number and see if he can get any information from the voicemail, and maybe see if he can get a call back.  He said if I get another call, or more calls, we can take it to the next level.

  • What a jerk!
Glad you don't feel too threatened, but still...not cool. Keep us posted on if the cops find out who it was

  • I'd go buy an airhorn and have some fun with his number around 3am. But that's just me.

  • I'm glad you called the cops. Imagine if you were a 90 year old lady and heard that? Talk about scaring someone into a heart attack or something.

I would think the cops would be able to track down a cell phone. It's not like they don't have access to phone records and phone companies.

  • I totally love the idea of the airhorn at 3am!  Hopefully the cops can at least put the fear of prosecution in that Jackass's head!  What a TOOL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
