Fearless? Or insane?

http://www.boston.com/news/science/articles/2012/07/25/parachutist_fearless_felix_jumps_from_18_miles/

This guy sky dived from a height three times higher than commercial jetliners fly - from the damn near atmospheric border.  His top rate of speed - 536 mph

I kind of like watching daredevil stuff - like the guy who walked a tightrope across Niagra Falls - but do you think there is a line between being daring or fearless and just having a fucking death wish?

Re: Fearless? Or insane?

  • I'm going with insane.  I could NEVER will myself to jump from that high.
  • Fearless. That's fucking amazing. I really want to go skydiving, but I definitely wouldn't have the balls to do it from that high up.

AATB, I'm quite disappointed that this post is not about the amazing YA series by Francine Pascal about a girl born without the fear gene. Way to go. ETA: I guess I should actually answer your question. I think it's kind of both. If he's willing to put his life at risk to do something like that, that's up to him, and he might just place more importance on his experiences than his longevity. I get really judgy about people who stuff like that who have families, though.
  • This is awesome. I hope he can break the sound barrier.
  • Fearless.

That's awesome!  I'd do it in a heartbeak if my H hadn't used his veto of the year (2 years ago) to ban more skydiving.  But then again, I'm also a person who would volunteer for a one-way trip to deep space.  So I might be insane.
  • I always thought that I might skydive until Blue posted about that woman who came out of her harness.  It is completely off the table for me now.
  • Terrifying. Insane. Demented.

I am deathly afraid of heights, though. H would think this is amazing.
  • I like wild rides at amusement parks and stuff but my thrill seeking kind of ends there, lol.  Imagine if this guy does break the sound barrier.  I mean, where do you go from there?

  • I'd have to say a little bit of both.

I'm curious: do you know when you break the sound barrier? Like can you hear it? I know when I would go to air shows and the jets would break the sound barrier, we'd hear a noise, but it was delayed since we were far away. Do they hear it as it's happening?

I feel like I sound really naive and that I should know this lol.

I was JUST telling the kids about this yesterday. It wasn't so bad until we flipped around and could see the ground and just how far we could plummet to our deaths.

    Good times

    ETA: Meant to quote Mara.
  • Fearless if you don't have kids
Insane (and selfish) if you do

I don't think it's fair to do these things if you have kids young enough that you have to support, and I am referring to the non-$$ part.

<div>My uncle has said that there is a sound shift.  Like you're pressurized and have a static sound in your ears and then it's just gone when you break.  I'd imagine, since you leave the sound behind you, you don't hear anything until it catches back up  ;)</div>

  • Goddamn I want to go skydiving. There's a place like, an hour away that you can do it for like, 200 bucks. Also, I'm even more excited to go home in two weeks, we're going to Canada's Wonderland and riding all the roller coasters =D
  • Just the picture makes me nauseous.

I'm shocked that the guy made that jump in 1960!

That's...random?  Might as well live in a bubble if you have kids considering anything can be dangerous.
  • I am going to skydive into a 3rd world country and adopt a baby. Fvck you, Angelina and Madonna.

God AATB, you're such a one upper. I also commented on the having kids thing. It's not so much that I think parents should stop having fun when they have kids, but doing something super risky runs me the wrong way. I don't know how dangerous skydiving is, but my blood boiled when I saw an IMAX movie about a guy who was doing a solo Everest climb and acknowledged that his toddler might never see him again. Of course lots of mundane things are dangerous, but I just felt so bad for his wife and kid. This is a PR since I just got to work.
