Snarky Brides

F/U Kittens

We went to the adoption event last night and were able to take home two beautiful little guys. I'm hoping to have pics to post later, but they're on DH's phone, so it'll have to wait a bit.

One is a twelve-week old orange and white boy, who was named Vanilla by the shelter. We'll be changing his name, partly because he only answers to Vaneller (we are in Boston after all), and I refuse to call him that. He's ridiculously energetic, fun-loving, curious and always wants to play. He's adjusted really well to the bedroom we're using as a safe room, and has ventured out into the rest of the apartment a bit too.

The other is an eight-week old black and white cat named Chaos. I'm thinking of renaming him Cyclops because of the white patch right between his eyes. Chaos was really sweet and cuddly after we got him calmed down at the adoption event, but since bringing him home he's been very nervous. He spends most of his time under the bed in the safe room, and doesn't want to eat (he drinks plenty of water, though) when we can coax him out. DH is worried sick over him.

I know it's natural for cats to be nervous in new environments, but his refusal to eat is scaring us a bit. Has anyone dealt with this before? Should we put a food dish under the bed for him? Leave him alone?

Edit: Now with craptastic photos. Forgive Vanilla, he moves too fast to get a good pic.

Re: F/U Kittens

  • YAY!! I've heard of that a lot with new cats- I wouldn't put any new food out- he'll find the food and water when he's ready. I think it's really normal for them to "hide" for a while when in a new environment. Can't wait to see the pics!!

Oh man, they are cute!  I love Vanilla's markings.

Ditto Knittibell about food.  Just make sure it's available, he'll eat when he's hungry!

  • Oh, they're adorable!

And what is F/U. At first I assumed "F You"- but then,"Fukk you, Kittens!" seemed highly unlikely. Embarassed
  • Yeah they will definitely eat when they're ready - he's just getting used to his new environment.

Those kittens are so precious!  I LOVE Vanilla's markings too - very beautiful.

    I want one now :(

  • Oh Opal, they are so cute. I'm so happy for you and them. I think Cyclops will be fine, he just needs to adjust. But I would be a worrier also. Just let him know the food and water is there. He will probably start venturing out when you're not there. But I know when I moved my older cat he stayed under the bed for 2 weeks. Let us know how it goes.

  • I'm glad to hear it's not unusual. I'd been googling like crazy, and it seemed like we were doing everything right. DH was so worried about them though, that he got up at the crack of dawn just to check on them. He's sweet like that :D

Raynes--he is beautiful, huh? We've been joking that of course we'd wind up with an orange and white kitty since those were our alma mater's colors, but we didn't pick him for that. He sort of picked us, and I'm glad he did.

  • Yeah, that one took me a while too, Knittibell. Especially since "Eff you, ______!!!" is a pretty common thread title around here.
  • How cute! Congrats on adopting Opal. :)
I'm sure cyclops will adjust in no time.

Congratulations on your new additions!  They are adorable  :)

That's crazy, though ...  we adopted 2 also from an event at the shelter this week by our house!

    Here are mine:

Amber ... a 3 month old Calico.  She's a nut, but very well behaved ... if that makes any sense.  lol

Emma .... she's 8 weeks old and a little wild, but she's coming around.

  • Congrats to you too! They're gorgeous.

  • They're so cute!  Congrats!

I'm sure Chaos/Cyclops will be fine after a few days.  Ditto everyone else, just leave the food where he can find it, and he'll find it when he's ready.

  • They are so adorable!! He's just adjusting to scary new surroundings. I'd put some food under there for him for today and then slowly move it out so he has to come out. Is it the same food they were feeding him at the shelter? I know if I switch Demons food (like I'm doing right now with her "bland' diet) she won't eat it right away. She just looks at the food and then looks at me  like "Ok, funny mom, where's my real food?"

My monster at 5 weeks when I got her (she's the black one, the grey is her sister)
I could fit both of them in one hand.

     and my monster now.

  • My cat didn't eat when I first got him either. What I did was mix some soft canned food with the hard food and he gobbled that right up. It could be that he got spoiled on soft food and you need to trick him into eating the hard stuff.

  • Yes, Katie, we're feeding them the same as what they had at the shelter. We were warned that a change could be a bad idea! Vegas, he doesn't even seem to be going for wet food right now, but hopefully that'll change soon. Thanks for the advice, everyone!
