Book Recomendation

I was thinking about reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. I have been wanting to reading for a while but haven't gotten around to it. I wanted to know what  you all thought of it? I believe a while back someone mention reading it. This may be a post and run since work is kicking my butt.

Re: Book Recomendation

  • I have it on my kindle and I heard the movie was great, but I haven't gotten around to it yet. :-(
    my read shelf:
Meredith's book recommendations, liked quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)

  • I read all three and loved them. But some people find them slow. I like that kind of mystery though. There are some pretty vivid and detailed sexual aggression scenes though, just in case that kind of thing bothers you...
  • My DH's Son-in-Law is reading it,and couldnt put it down. It's on my list.

  • I really want to read it, but something else keeps getting in the way.  I'm going to suggest it to my Knottie book club.  That way, I'll have to read it.
  • I read the first 50 pages one night.  I haven't read any of it since.

It's a slow starter, in the first 50 pages I haven't even gotten to a girl yet, let alone one with a distinctive tattoo.

I do plan to pick it back up again.
  • I haven't been able to get into it. I have been enjoying the following:

Never Wave Goodbye - Doug Magee
The Burning Wire - Jeffery Deaver (can you ever go wrong with a Lincoln Rhyme/Amelia Sachs novel? Or any Jeffery Deaver for that matter?)
Killing Floor - Lee Child (its the first Jack Reacher novel, and Fische swears I'm going to love it - so far, so good)

I also have Seshat's 2 books! Can't wait to read them, either! :)

  • I loved all three books in the Tattoo series.  I agree that the first one is a very slow starter, but once it picks up I was hooked.

I also read The Passage recently and liked that one.  It's also a slow starter, but I couldn't stop reading once the action started.

I have a Kindle and love it.  I was concerned that reading on a screen would strain my eyes like the computer does, but it doesn't at all.  I like having the option to increase the text size.  I commute on the subway so it's nice not to have to lug heavy books with me, and I like having a new book immediately available once I finish one.  You can also send Word or pdf documents to yourself via connection to your computer (free) or by emailing it to your Kindle (for a fee that's not too high).  Do you have any specific questions about the Kindle?

[QUOTE]Msmery: How do you like the Kindle? I really want to get one, but I don't know anyone who actually has one to ask about it.

I love it. The only "weird" thing I found about it is that when you turn the page, the screen flashes dark for a second. To sort of re-set the e-ink or something. At first I was like, "whoa!" but now I don't even notice it. Just so that doesn't take you by surprise!

It really does feel like reading a paperback to me. I can become engrossed in a kindle book as easily as a regular book. But it's easier to hold than a book. I also use it for some of my school texts, but it's hard to locate an exact page number since kindle does a system where you can see the "percentage done" on the bottom. That's because of the text size readjustment thing, so 15% of the book might be 50 pages for some people and 65 pages for other people. but I find it easy to highlight and make notes if that interests you at all. (Much easier than on the Nook.)

I think on amazon there's a space on the kindle message board where you can find people in your area with kindles who will let you play with it.

  • I did the kindle app for my iPod touch to see if I even liked reading in that format. That's what Never Wave Goodbye is in, and Dragon Tattoo is in.

J is on I think his 2nd or 3rd book that way.

I'll let Sesh send it to you, since it's her info to give out and her personal information.

  • Interesting. I think I'll probably get one after I pay off the last half of my dress. Or possibly just ask for it for my birthday =D

These are good points.  I also had to get used to the little flash between pages.  Sometimes if I haven't used it in a while, I have to get used to it again.

It's also sometimes annoying to try to find a place in the book because of the lack of page numbers.  It's difficult to refer back to other sections of the book if you want to.  You can make bookmarks as you go along though.  I did this when I was reading The Passage because there were certain parts I knew I would want to refer back to.

Is anyone comfortable with saying the subject matter or genre of Seshat's books?  I've seen a few people say they are good, and I am always looking for a new book.
  • Tried reading GWTDT, but I couldn't get into it... I might try again.

My most recent obsession: The Hunger Games. HIGHLY Recommend the series.

FWIW, Anysunrise- I have a Kindle and I love it.  FYI... just like music for ipods, you can sometimes find books for it without going through Amazon.  I'm a little worried to try them, in case they have viruses or anything? But the Kindle will take any PDF, too, which is nice.
  • I only have the Kindle app for my iPod touch, but I have to say that having something small that lights up, but not too bright, to read in bed is something my H and I both really love. We don't keep the other up and we don't have to fiddle with a booklight.

OMG, I was literally just coming in here to ask if anyone had read that.  Weird.  Someone recommended it to me, and I just looked at a synopsis to find out if I want to read it.  What book or type of book would you compare them to?
  • I read the first two and just started the second. Very good so far.
    There's a Knottie book club??

I was actually going to ask if anyone torrented their books. The only major deterrence on getting a Kindle for me is how fast I will burn through money if I can order them instantly.
