I'm getting a Dog!

Re: I'm getting a Dog!

  • I interrupt this serious convo about genetically engineered pets to AW my shelter dog.

    Tired dog:

Sad bath dog, right after we adopted him:

Dog in a box, when we were moving:

Adventure dog wished he could stay up here while we're driving:

And dog and FI became best friends after we adopted Bax:

  • Nates, I love your face.  And your dog.

    Dog loves AATB.

And he wouldn't throw up on your carpet.
  • Just an FYI, the new Smart Money magazine ( Jan issue) has an article on the cost of pets.....

I have a friend who went in to debt because of her diabetic, epileptic cat. by the time she decided the humane thing to do was to put her cat down. She was 25k in the hole. Vet hospital bills were astronomical. She was so broke, she had to get a different apartment and I ultimately felt so badly for her I payed for the sweet cat to be put down.

  • Koda--he was such a baby about that box and he could easily have jumped out.

Steph--In all fairness, he might.  He does have an issue with clogged anal glands from time to time (TMI, I know).
  • Baxter would NEVER act like a deplorable little shitbag.  Lola, however, thinks she shiits chocolate covered cashews.  And that my carpet is her toilet paper.

Bulldogs also make me sad. I will never support people who breed them.

You can get an adult shelter dog and have it be ok with kids. I adopted a Bichon who was a stray and in a city pound. Who would abandon a Bichon!? But I am so lucky. He came to me with some bad habits but once he knew he was safe, they all went away. He also does beautifully with my husband's 7 year old kid.

Adoption for me from here on out. Search petfinder and meet dogs. Going through a foster organization is great too because you can often have 'test runs' with the dog in your home to see if it's a good fit.
  • UM EXCUSE ME! I AW'd my dog too you know.

  • I see Sarah's point about bull dogs. I'm thinking of French Bulldogs specifically, and they have lots of health problems. Good breeders are trying to breed OUT health problems, rather than maintain characteristics that are "cute" but propagate health problems.

But the real issue here is that Nebb doesn't let us see Vinny nearly enough. I need more pug in my life.

    Yup.

Plus French Bulldogs have been around since the 1800's.  I dont see them going away anytime soon.

  • Nebb your dog is adorable.

Nates I love adventure dog. That is too cute.

This is who we bring home tomorrow night after he gets fixed and chipped. He is a mastiff mixed with an unknown. He is about 7-8 weeks old. Way younger than I wanted but Mastiff was on FI's list of wants and he was so mild tempered and quiet. We don't know what to name him, but FI likes Goliath National Bank.  I figured if he finally gave in to get a dog he should be able to get the kind he wanted. We got him from a shelter, he arrived there alone and abandoned this past Saturday. Bonus is the think his birthday is around Halloween, my favorite holiday. This is going to be a training catastrophe.

  • I'm not going to rehash what everyone else has said but here are some things to also consider.

Who will watch the dog when you have to leave it? At some point you will need to go out of town and find other arrangements. Depending on the dogs breed/background kennels or other boarding facilities may not accept it so keep that in mind while looking.
Also certain breeds can cause you to get dropped from home owners/renters insurance or make you unable to rent/buy a house if there are restrictions. Mostly this applies to the breeds labeled (many times unfairly) bully breeds, but I've also seen it applied to any dog over 35 pounds as well.

ETA: and you've already decided on one :) He's so cute! And going to get so big!

  • Katie- All good things to consider. We will trade off dog watching with our friends. We watch their dogs when they go out of town, and his mom would always be there.

and drooly ;) One of my friends has 3 mastiffs and holy jeebus the amount of drool...They are quite possibly the sweetest things though.
  • I know he will get huge, which is what I want. We have more than enough space for him. He will basically have his own bedroom once he gets big enough to move him out of our room. Until then he will sleep in the walk in closet or bathroom so he doesn't get used to being too close to us. I just can't wait to bring him home. He has that big puppy belly I love so much. He is getting all of his updated shots, worm treatments, and neutered tomorrow morning before we bring him home. He was only in the shelter for two days and two other couples wanted to look at him after us so we had to make a quick decision.

  • Cute pup!

Are you going to crate train? I find its the easiest way to potty train a pup. Plus they'll be safe in your crate while you're out of the house and they can't get into anything. Get him in a puppy class too, its good for you and the puppy!

  • Ok so I didn't wade through all 4 pages but here are some major cons to the breed. (a breed that I find ridiculously adorable BTW)

Pretty much ever bulldog has: an elongated soft pallete, a hyoplastic trachea and stenotic nares.  I know big words but all three of those things lead to a lot less room to pass air. It is why they snore when they are awake etc.  The problem is that if they ever have trouble breathing (over heating, allergies, get sick, recovery from anesthesia)  this turns in to a cyclic problem and it just gets worse and worse and worse until they have a completely blocked airway.

We reccomend every English bulldog have their soft pallete shortened.  Its the only one of the 3 that we can help with, but is a tough surgery and has complications of its own.

This is probably the worst problem that a bulldog puppy is born with but there are others.  I really do love that breed, but I will now never get one because of the mass amounts of problems they tend to have.

This does not mean that your shelter puppy won't have health problems but there is a better likelyhood that they won't

Image and video hosting by TinyPic Love is like infinity: You can't have more or less infinity, and you can't compare two things to see if they're "equally infinite." Infinity just is, and that's the way I think love is, too.

  • Ok you can shoot me but I am not going to read through all the posts....

When you adopt a shelter dog many come with a LOT of the vetting included and the adoption fees are not all that much.  My dog was $117 FULLY vetted and chipped.

If you buy a dog from a breeder you have to get all the vetting done which easily can top $500 (that is if you plan on being responsible pet owners getting all the shots, fixing your dog, microchip, heartworm meds, etc) and that isn't even adding the cost of the dog.

Many people claim they have "papers"  AKC isn't worth a thing...flame me if you want but when the ACK offers special of register 10 litters the 11th is free that is basically promoting bad breeding and millers.  True breeders would NEVER have that many litters in a year.

When you adopt a dog you save two lives....the dog you take home and the dog you bought some more time from being euthed (sore subject today trying to save several dogs from being killed).

There are breed specific rescues also available if you are deadset on a certain breed you can go through a rescue - you are close enough to Ohio the Columbus Dog Connection website has a full list of breed specific rescues on their website.

I quite honestly love the mutts....many times you get better genes, unique look, and some people may disagree but they know....they know you saved them and gave them a chance.

  • Aggie and Jelleny- We adopted a puppy last night, but thank you so much for your answers. We ended up getting a mastiff mix of some sort.

We did have to pay for him but we adopted him from a shelter. He comes home tonight.
