A good wine under 10 bucks post it!

  • If you can tolerate even the thought of going into a Walmart, you can get Oak Leaf for under $3.  The Pinot Grigio/Chardonnay blend is shockingly good.

    I also wish I lived near a Trader Joe's.

The Charles Shaw Blend from Trader Joe's, a.k.a. "2 Buck Chuck" is not a good cheap wine; it is a good wine that happens to be cheap.

As legend has it, a divorcing couple owned the Trader Joe's chain and a vineyard. In the settlement, He got Trader Joe's, She got the much more lucrative California vineyard. The catch: She could only sell her wine through Trader Joe's. To spite Her, He sells the wine for $2 per bottle. My fiance and I are serving 2 Buck Chuck and beer at our reception, and we're speding under $500.

And we already mentioned that we don't all have a Trader Joe's.  Thanks though.
  • Pretty much anything by Barefoot, especially their Moscato.
Chaucer's Honey Mead (the raspberry is also excellent)
If you're in/close to NC, Duplin's wines are fabulous and sweet, as are any others that use Muscadines/Scuppernongs.

  • The Smoking Loon family of wines tends to be pretty reliable and inexpensive. I'm not really drinking them anymore, because I am trying to expand my tastes, but generally I trust them. The Viognier is quite lovely.

I'll vouch for the Rabbit Ridge zinfandel - had it pretty recently, and it does what a zinfandel is supposed to do for around $10 a bottle.

I also recently tried a Clos du Bois chardonnay and found that it has a pleasant buttery taste, and usually buttery chardonnays are a little more expensive.

If you're trying to open up your wine interests, though, the best thing to do is to find tastings and go to them. I'm going to two separate free tastings this weekend, both Thanksgiving themed, so this may be a good time to look for events.
