Wine Suggestions

We're hosting beer and wine for our wedding reception and luckily we get to stock our on bar.  FI and I aren't big wine drinkers, so what do you suggest for a white and red?

Chardonnay, Pinto Grigio, and Sauv Blanc are crowd pleasers. For red, I like a nice Malbec or Pinot Noir. Or how about offering a red and a white sangria?
  • I find that Merlot is always a good choice for red, it's fairly easy drinking and goes well with a lot of foods.

For whites, my favourite is a riesling-gewurtraminer.

Riesling is delicious! But it's more of a dessert wine, no?
  • MMmmmmmm, sangria - if you want to make your own, Moen makes fantastic flavored syrups that work well as a base.

I second MrsE, but I also recommend perhaps a syrah instead of the malbec?  Or both?

I don't think so but it depends on the vineyard and the sugar content. If you prefer a really dry wine, then some might find Riesling too sweet but I like it with dinner. It's one of my favourites. Plus the gewurtraminer is a bit crisp and citrus-y so when you have a bottle of R-G it's freaking delicious.

  • Any brands in particular that you recommend?  Or anything to definitely NOT buy?  We're buying for around 160 guests, so our price range is on the low end I suppose $3-$6 per bottle.

Should we offer two different types of red and two different types of white or would one of each be ok?

  • Supposedly Trader Joe's "Two Buck Chuck" is fantastic.

  • At $3-6 per bottle you won't get any recommendations from me other then to make your own wine which I would do yesterday.

I don't know what wine prices are like in the states, but here you won't get anything other then Baby Duck (nasty).

Maybe try finding a beer/wine distributor to help you choose. They might let you sample a few different kinds. Or tell them the food you're serving, and ask them to help you pick.

I agree, these are 2 of my favorites as well. My H orders me a Chenin Blanc from Napa when its on sale. LOVE.

Sauv Blanc is also good. I do tend to stay away from the New Zealand/Australian brands though.

Also, you're from LA? It might be really cool if you offer all local wines. Maybe you could get all of your wines from one particular vineyard even.

Ha!  Sorry, I'm not really from LA that's just a fake zip I put in when signing up for TK.  We do have local vineyards in NC that I thought about using.  They are mostly Muscadine wines which a lot of people find too sweet.  I love them though!

  • I haven't had Trader Joe's wine either.  Maybe I'll have a bottle tomorrow night.

Depending on where you are in NC, I know there are a ton of vineyards about 30 min outside of Roanoke VA, and their wine is pretty fantastic.  Based on how much you buy, you might be able to get a great deal.

It's a good buy for a tight budget, so if you have a TJ nearby definitely try some. The brand is Charles Shaw.

We served Kitchen Sink white and red blends at our wedding.  The reason I chose blends is because a lot of people might not like Chardonnay or Merlot and would steer away from them and/or just automatically think they wouldn't like it.  So, instead of choosing from a Chardonnay or Merlot, they just choose red or white.  They are both wines that anyone would like if they like wine. :)

Here's a tip for you:  If you have a Total Wine near you, they will take back any unused wine so long as the label is not damaged.  No one drank red wine at our outdoor wedding and we ended up returning $800 in alcohol.

    We served the reserve labels:

    http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/kitchen-sink-white-reserve/116819750

    http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/kitchen-sink-red-reserve/116818750

But the regular label is also very nice and less costly:

    http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/kitchen-sink-white-blend/105068750

    http://www.totalwine.com/eng/product/kitchen-sink-red-blend/105067750

P.S. These were suggested to me by the manager at Total Wine.  I bought a bottle of each to see what I liked best, then went back and bought the cases (which you get a 10% discount on).

    Good luck!

ETA:  Sorry, those are a little out of your price range, but I have no suggestions for wines under $10 that would be widely enjoyable.  I would stay away from really sweet wines (such as Muscadine or Riesling) because I have found that people who drink wine often tend not to enjoy those as much.

<div>I couldn't drink wine at all until I moved here and tried this. I especially love the Carolina Red from Duplin.  I also love the Sweet Carolina wines from Chatham Hills winery in Morrisville.  They are fruit wines - I LOVE the raspberry, blackberry and strawberry ones.  I have also worked my way up to drinking Riesling now, and am very slowly starting to be able to tolerate slightly drier stuff. Baby steps!</div>

ETA:  Drinking at lunch is one of my favorite things to do.  Well, it used to be when I worked and went to lunch with other people.  It's probably not the best idea to have wine lunches since I work at home by myself.

  • I'd offer more than one red and white, one dry and one sweet of each or a champagne in place of the sweet white.
  • I'm kind of late on this, but, for your price point, I think the Whole Foods house brand (3 Wishes? I think it's called) would work really well. It's pretty decent wine, they have more than one red and white and it's around $3 a bottle, or $33 bucks a case. Brilliant.

  • As My husband and I are big Wine lovers, let me give you some advice. first NO TWO BUCK CHUCK! What are you serving for dinner? This will make a big difference in your wine choices. We are getting our wine from Costco, they have the best prices and the best choices. Also, buy your beer in a keg, a large(regular) keg provides 220 servings- kegs cost about $140-150. You should be able to get a keg at a local liquor store. If you want to pm me your menu, I will give you suggestions to buy at Costco. They have very drinkable wines in the 6-7 dollar range.
