[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Another first in Presidential history : But where were they at the polls? And will they vote in November? People might say it's nto what they wanted, but if it were such a big issue that it would swing their vote for the presidential election, I don't understand why they didn't have a bigger turnout yesterday.

Because it was voted on during a republican primary not a general election so while the 500,000 votes seems high its less than 1/3 of the voters that voted in the last general election and less than 1/6 that are registered to vote and overwhelmingly more conservative voters turned out because it was the republican primary

It makes me sad to say this, but I truly believe there are a lot of people that say in public they support gay marriage, but in fact do not. I think the same thing about racism, too. A lot more people would fall into the homophobic/racist category behind closed doors, but in public they claim to support it.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Another first in Presidential history : It was long, too. (side note--it was funny for me, because the guy reading it was obviously a transplant from my area and at first I was excited to hear a familiar accent). In the end, though, I wasn't surprised at the church for going with it because that's their thing. I AM pissed at people who can't separate their religious practices from laws that affect many people, though.

I'm with you. H is Catholic, and he voted against it yesterday. So did a few of our Catholic friends (and I did too, though I'm not Catholic). So at least there are SOME people who are able to separate them.

  • Also, if u factor in that it was a majority of conservatives that voted and a lower turn out they should have won buy a lot more than 61%. The pollsters were predicting 75% .

I wonder if the Baptist churches did something similar to what the Catholic churches did. That would have a larger impact around here. It seems like for every 1 Catholic church I see, there are 10 Baptists ones.

[QUOTE]I dont think its a slam dunk either AATB, but my friends in the gay community, even my gay republican friends say that they will vote for a Dem who is truly for gay marriage, and people underestimate the power of the gay vote. They have a lot of money and are very smart. They will throw that money at their cause.
