Many may know the common term used for "birthing" the placenta. It's the afterbirth. That's what comes out... and a bunch of other stuff I hear.

[QUOTE]Nebb, the placenta is "birthed" after the baby is born.  The doctor usually massages the mother's abdomen and the placenta etc. comes out.

Thankyou! I knew about the placenta and what not but I assumed it was also attached by something you also cut (like another umbilical).

Emily- JCB has talked many times about not having (or wanting) kids.  I don't remember learning that in my health class... and if H and I were never planning on having kids, I'd probably never feel the need to learn exactly what happens during pregnancy or childbirth.  Maybe you weren't trying to be condescending about it, but if you were... that's a really lame thing to get high and mighty about.

Almost as lame as thinking you're better than everyone for not shaving and letting dead blood pool around your legs and feet.

I'm not a mom or a childbirth expert by ANY means, but my mom's been working on Labor and Delivery since I was seven (21 years) and I've picked up some stuff along the way.

Well i think thats just ignorant to say.  I am grossed out by her playing with expelled eggs from her ovary and uterine lining, but I know as much as i can about childbirth for someone who doesnt (cant have) kids.  I have even seen a few births.  So im highly offended by that.

She has passed the line of interest IMO.

And almost every poster on TK has gone through periods, therefore they know what it's all about.  Not every poster has gone through childbirth, hence not knowing all of the parts of it.

Being grossed out by someone playing with their period blood and bleeding all over the floor does not equal being grossed out by normal body functions. You're jumping to conclusions.

Playing with your fucking period and knowing how childbirth works are NOT dependent on each other.  Seriously, anna? I get it, you're a little crunchy sometimes (which I usually admire), and you usually argue well and come across quite intelligent... but this is just effing lame.

Also. She didn't say she just didn't use pads/tampons. She said she ENJOYED seeing her blood all over the fucking house.  That's nasty as shiit.

This is one of the most ignorant and stupid things I've ever seen on TK. I know how childbirth works, but if someone isn't going to have kids, why do they need to know the nitty gritty details of it? It would be like someone without breast cancer needing to know the intimate details of having a mastectomy.

I dunno, I don't have an issue with NikkiVegan.  I did remember that she was the one in that thread, and I have no desire to re-read that thread, but at the same time, she's not blasting it all over the boards constantly these days.  She made a mistake -- she posted some TMI information (and maybe to her, it's not really TMI) -- and she doesn't do it anymore.  There are plenty of posters (myself included) that posted some stupid things when we were new to TK.  I wouldn't want to see my mistakes rehashed all over the place, especially if I wasn't making them anymore.

I just think it's weird that people are so grossed out by stuff all the time. I've said before (I think it the armpit hair thread) that I think it's lame to call people gross for not shaving and that gross is kind of overused. I do think that we would probably learn more about our own bodies if we weren't so busy being grossed out all the time. I mean, childbirth is considered a dirty, nasty, unclean thing by so many people, no wonder we don't all know that the umbilical cord is attached to the placenta which is expelled right after the baby comes out. But that's more the fauly of society at large than it is any individual person. I just think it's a shame.

I kind of agree with this. I work in the medical field, and while I don't tend to encounter a lot of labour/delivery/pregnancy issues in my work life, I do get exposed to a fair bit of information about it and consider myself well-informed. Now that I'm pregnant, however, and reading up on some stuff, I realize how much more information there was to know and how little of it is "public knowledge" (for lack of a better phrase).

Thing is, before being pregnant, that stuff didn't apply to my immediate reality, so it didn't matter and I wasn't too concerned with it all. I'm not saying that people should be ignorant of how their bodies work, but I can accept that not everyone is going to be 100% sure of how every last thing works inside.
