So, I was making lunches, and I asked H if he wanted a banana in his for tomorrow. Suddenly he went from calmly reading to "Nooo! You NEVER have bananas on a boat! It's bad luck!" (because apparently he became very superstitious in the last 15 seconds).
So I looked it up, and yeah. Bananas are bad luck because 1) boats with bananas on board won't catch fish; 2) they cause boats to sink; 3) they ferment and kill sailors; and 4) people slip and fall to their deaths. Ok. First of all, they haul 600-foot nets in the river. They're going to catch SOMETHING. Second, if the boat sinks, it's in knee to chest-deep water and the shore is in sight. Third, there is no "below deck" on their boat for them to ferment. And slipping and falling? Unlikely in their huge boots.
Has anyone ever heard this before? I know I'm not up-to-date on my superstitions, but this one gave me a good chuckle.
Oh, and this is my source:
