Snarky Brides

College Online??

Background: I'm considering going back to school but it's tricky because I'm not sure where we'll be living in a year once Fi graduates. In his field we really could be anywhere in the world.

SO I've been researching grad programs online, thinking that may be the best option for me. Has anyone taken online college courses? What did you think about it? Are you able to get the same out of them as you would in a classroom?

Thanks all!

Re: College Online??

  • That's a good point... I think my learning style would suit it well. I'm looking to go into School Counseling and I definitely think that I could learn the material for the coursework online but I'd miss the open discussion that I loved in my undergrad Psych classes.

I agree though that the thought of an entire online grad program is a little daunting. I feel like I'd just be a hermit and never have any human interaction! It's just tricky not knowing where we're going to be living - that's the nice thing about the internet. At least it's everywhere!

Thanks for the tips B :-)

[QUOTE]I think it depends. I'm at a traditional university right now, but I take some of my classes online. Generally I only take online classes that don't require much interaction so it would depend on what you want to go to school for. If you want to study nursing, online classes are bad (anything that requires a lot of practical application I don't think is good when taking online courses). But if it's something like business management, maybe that'd be an easier degree to get online. Also, I'd try to see if you could find a traditional university that offers online degrees as opposed to "online universities," which usually seem sketchy to me. Finally, I just watched this video in one of my online courses- you may find it interesting.

YES! I'm totally with you there. I've found a few programs online through traditional universities. I'm always a little wary of online only universities.

  • If you take online classes, I'd recommend taking them from a brick and mortar university that and not from an online college. Some employers look down on online colleges like the University of Phoenix. I'm not going to get into whether or not it's justified, but I have a friend with an MBA from UoP who has been told by multiple potential employers that his degree just isn't taken seriously. :(

She wants to be a Juvenile PO. She graduated in Spring with her BA in Admin of Justice, so she's finishing up.
  • I'm not there yet, for looking at Grad School stuff, but she has to do 20 hours week of fieldwork, and then her regular 15 units, AND she has to keep working for us at least 2 days a week, otherwise, we let her go, and she needs a job. She's going to be a very busy girl for the next few years.

    That's pretty messed up.

  • I have a friend that's doing her BA online and she seems to be doing ok but has had some touch and go issues with worrying about whether or not ALL her required classes will be available online each semester. It might just be the particular school's program that's at issue, though.

[QUOTE]Avoid for-profits at all cost, especially right now. Brick and mortar institutions that offer distance learning are the way to go. Be prepared for additional work with an online class, many are trying to lose the stigma that they are easier than classroom work. Be cautious, graduate credits are not easily trasnferrable, where as undergrad have more flexibility. The Frontline documentary that PP offered up is fantastic and chilling. I could talk shop on this all day! (it's what I do for a living!)

Oh yay! You're a good person to chime in then :-) I'm at work now so I will have to watch the video later but I read the article along with it and it is chilling. I'd definitely go the brick and mortar route for sure. I'm still debating just holding off until we know where we'll be living and then applying somewhere near me. The problem is if we end up living in Europe I would want a US education because Europe would only be a few years and then I'd want to work in the US.

This whole figuring what to be when I grow up thing is tricky!!

  • Ugh - group projects would be very tricky online! Good point!

I'm running out so this is sort of a P&R but I'll check back in a bit!

  • I am going to school online. I am gettting my entire degree that way. It is an actually university in Arizona that offers certain degree programs online. I love it. I have been going to school this way for a year and I am makin better grades than I ever did with I went to Community College.

  • I agree with PP. If the online classes are from a traditional brick and motar college they are a great option. I took online classes for my 2nd Masters and loved the flexability of them. You have to be really disciplined though. Many employers don't take online only colleges seriously so the degree isn't worth the paper its printed on.
