Is it too early

to discuss the Halloween candies you'd like to purchase for distribution this year? This is H's first Halloween living with me, and I wanted him to give me some input.

Last year, at Thanksgiving, my sister gave me a bag of all the candy my nephews don't like, and they included the Smarties rolls of Sweet Tarts, and I became addicted. I think I might buy some of those this year. I found Hannah Montana candy bracelets when I was at a Wal-Mart in St. Louis a couple of years back, and holy crap, those were popular with the kids.

If I get Sweet Tarts, I will have to stick to fruity candies, because I do not like the smell that a chocolate/fruity candy mix creates. It either has to be all fruity or all chocolate. I guess I could get two bowls and separate them. Like a kosher kitchen.

I could go on and on about this subject.

Re: Is it too early

  • Kosher candy bowls!! Cute!!! I am a huge fan of chocolate. Kit kats, snickers, twix....etc...m&m's. Yum. I am eating hershey kisses as I write this lol!
  • Hmm, I'm a huge chocolate fan! Kit Kat, Reese's, M&Ms...
Thats usually the type of stuff I buy.
    Well, and candy corn. MMMmm
  • It's never too early to talk candy. We don't buy any because the only people that come to our door are teenaged hoodlums. I seriously got cussed out through the door last Halloween because "We know you're there! We know you're there" even though I was sitting alone in the dark and you definitely could not see me through the windows.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • The BIG hits last year were gummies shaped like gross stuff (body parts and skulls and things) and those really repulsive candies that are so sour they taste like a mouthful of vinegar. The kids loved daring each other to eat those.

All I know is that I buy a bag of white chocolate peanut butter cups, they are long gone before the first doorbell rings.
  • I love candy corn.

  • See, I give extra to the teenagers. "Here's some candy, please don't egg my house."

  • My unpopular opinion is that I do not care for candied corn.

  • We don't get kids at our house, we're too far back off the street. So we don't buy any candy.

I've never lived anywhere where kids came to the door. At the house I grew up, it was a dirt trail with no streetlights and only 1 other house, so people were too afraid to go there at night in the dark.

That cannot possibly be an unpopular opinion.

ick - me either, and i always get weird looks from people when i say that. we do the placating-the-neighborhood-kids-with-candy thing too, since we had a bizarre tire-slashing incident on my street like 3 years ago.
    *sigh* i love halloween.

  • Ugh. Candy Corn.

We have Beggars Night here, where they go out on a school night, for a set time - usually 7-9 (or maybe 6-8, I don't remember). There's always 2 cars in the driveway if I'm home, so they're going to ring the bell. It didn't bother Maggie last year, but it will drive Max insane this year. Maybe I'll take him for a ride.

Then, you're free on Halloween, to have adult parties, etc. Apparently, that's the way it's always been done here, since J and his sister were kids.

  • Last Halloween we got home just after dark and there were no trick-or-treaters to be seen. The old money part of town with big stately mansions is exactly 3 streets away so I assume the neighborhood kids do their trick or treating there. I remember when I was 10 and we lived in the 'hood, my mom would drive us to 6th Street to trick-or-treat. Now I hope to live on 6th Street within the next 10 years and sit on my porch and bitch about the parents who do that.

I have never in my adult life been home to give candy to trick-or-treaters, except my first year out of college when I lived in a 3rd story apartment. I was so sad that no one came to my door.

My favorite was always the Willy Wonka mixed bag, so I'll probably get that this year and pretend to be disappointed that I have to eat the whole bag myself.

  • Oh, I didn't see the part about what I like to give out. I don't give out candy corn. Its ALL MINE!!

We live in a condo, so we don't give any out anyway. When I had my house, people used to drop their kids off in our neighborhood to trick or treat. I'd sit in the driveway and hand out candy until I ran out. One year I ran out of candy, went inside, and turned my outside light off. About 2 hours later, I hear a knock at the door. I didn't answer, so they rang the doorbell and just wouldn't go away! I answered the door and it was a man holding 2 kids, who were wrapped in toilet paper like mummies (very poorly). They were trick or treating. After everyone was back in their houses. I felt bad for the kids so I gave them string cheese, which is about all I had in my fridge. THen he asked if I had any candy. Ummmm. No. That was 2 hours ago. C-ya! When I got back inside I locked the door and turned out ALL the lights.

  • Ooh, it occurs to me that this year FI and I will actually be living in a house together, on a street, and kids may come trick-or-treating! Wow, one more thing to look forward to.

  • I'm big into Halloween and pumpkin carving. I was so disappointed to discover that because late October is a time of sub-freezing temps, parents take their kids to the downtown afternoon trick-or-treat shindig or out to Walmart. My first Halloween, someone walked all the way up my driveway (I'm in the geographical center of a block, so my driveway leads out between houses), past 8 carved and lit pumpkins and stole my best one. They didn't smash it, they just stole it. Damn I hate undergrads. (I'm in a college town, right next to campus)

I'll probably get a container of the autumn mix and call it good.

Last year I didnt buy candy to hand out because we never get kids and this little boy who couldnt have been older than 4 showed up dressed up as spiderman and I was looking at him through a crack in the blinds and he looked SO SAD that no one answered the door. I felt awful all night because I was convinced I ruined that little boys halloween.

I might buy just a small bag of smarties boxes and hand those out. I need to be prepared this year.
  • my baby was born on Halloween....has nothing to do with candy i just think it's awesome!

  • We lived in New York one year during Halloween and it was so cold, and my mom wanted me to wear my jacket over my costume and I wanted none of that.

I always wanted to be the badass who handed out full size candy bars. Someday.
