Snarky Brides

Game of Thrones? ***spoilers***

Anybody watch last night? And did you think that pouring molten gold over someone's head is an absolutely ingenious way to kill them?

I wanted to watch the next one on HBOgo right after, but of course it was so jammed up with people that I didn't get to watch. I got stuck on the loading screen for like an hour.

Re: Game of Thrones? ***spoilers***

  • That was definitely one of the more clever methods of murder that I've encountered. I couldn't stand that character, either, so I was glad to be rid of him. I didn't watch next week's yet, either, and I'm going to try and hold out. If I watch it now, I'll be all pouty on Sunday because I'll have nothing new to watch.
  • Me either Mel. I've wanted Viserys to die since the first episode.

He pretty much dies that way in the book too, so I was looking forward to seeing it on TV :D I tried to watch ep 7 on HBO Go but it wasn't working for me either. I'm going to try tonight and see what happens.

Confession? I fell asleep in the middle of Episode 7. D: It's not that it was boring -- far from it! -- I was just exhausted. We're going to rewatch it online tonight.

  • I just watched it and I never liked him either. Im interested to see where the story line goes. I never read the books so this is all new for me. I also never thought the kings son was actually his.

  • I'm gonna try to watch it again tonight too. It should be really good.

I started reading the book after episode 3 and I've almost finished the first one.

  • How many books in the series?  If you could compare it to another book/series based upon the style and overall story, what comparison would you make?  I love a good series, but the last sci-fi/fantasy series I took on was a huge disappointment.
  • Without giving away an spoilers next week episode is awesome....however one of the sex scenes is fairly detailed, long and kind of surprising.  I'm sure plenty of people will be talking about it for awhile.

I wanted to wait till next week to watch but couldn't help sneaking a peek.  I'll still watch it again on Sunday.

If someone is reading the book series and has a Kindle and I somewhat "know" you I'd be happy to do that lending thing and send you the next book or two.

There are currently four books, with a fifth coming out next month. If the author ever manages to finish it, it should be a seven book series.

It's epic fantasy, but it aside from a few surprisingly understated supernatural elements (dragons, zombies, rare occurences of magic), it reads more like historical fiction than fantasy to me. It's gritty, dark and violent -- including sexually violent -- heavy on war, politics and intrigue; light on more typical fantasy elements; and completely lacking the formulaic Good vs. Evil of WoT and LotR. It's all about shades of gray, as characters you initially perceive as villians become more sympathetic over the course of the series, and vice versa. I'm honestly not sure what I'd compare it to. One warning: the author has no qualms about killing off characters. If you get attached to your protagonists, it's not an easy read.

It's not particularly fantasy-y. I have encountered no magic thus far. I can't come up with a good comparison. I have all the e-versions though and I can hook you up for free 99.

=) Celles that was the best description of the series.  It took me awhile to get used to the fact that Martin had no issues with dispatching beloved characters whenever he felt the need.

Do you have the next book pre ordered?
  • In manner of style, who would you compare the author's writing to?  Is it well written?  Is the dialogue believable?  Has the author ever used "it was all a dream" as a means to get out of solving a particularly difficult problem?  Are there any signs of deus ex machina within the four books which have been published so far?  These questions are annoying, yea?  I treat new books like a blind date.  There are things that I need to KNOW.

ETA- I was convinced to read the Sword of Truth series by Terry Goodkind by a friend.  This is why I am concerned.  I was told that I would be reminded of the Dark Tower by SK.  This was a lie, and I felt betrayed.

I was afraid to pre-order it if its possible he's going to change the date again.  That would make me fume.  I have my kindle so I'll probably just wait till the day of and pay full price.  This book and better be worth the wait....that's all I'm saying.

Have you read the Wit'ch Fire series or the Casting's Triology?

Fortunately, I started reading after all of the current books were already published so I haven't been jerked around as much as Martin's long-time fans. I haven't read the other series you mentioned but I will look them up; I'm in desperate need of new authors!

*thumbs up* Yeah, next week's episode should be absolutely fantastic. I thought they would "conclude" the *ahem* hunting trip thing this episode, but I guess that will happen in episode 7.

I'll be OOT on Sunday so my friends and I will watch it and the next episode (8) the week after. And order pizza. I can't wait.

My friend who is watching the show with me who has never read the books was super excited they killed Viserys off. She said, "I was so afraid they'd keep him around for like 3 seasons and I'd have to put up with him." He was so one-dimensional, though, you know he's going to die. ;-)

I agree with all this. If I HAD to, LotR is what I'd compare it too, but it's much more realistic, whereas Tolkien is so high-and-mighty sometimes. I find the fantasy elements to be great, but secondary to character and plot in GoT.

And the books are BIG. Think, like, the longer Harry Potter books and that's all the books so far.

  • I didn't think the hunt was going to happen so soon but I'm glad cause it keeps the series from stalling out on TV. I think the makers are doing a wonderful job with getting the important details and general feelings from the book onto the screen. After next week episode only 3 episodes are left. But they've already announced that season 2 will start April 2012.

At one point, Amazon had Dance with Dragons up for pre-order in September 2008. *headdesk* I hope it really is only 7 books because I can't take a 5 year wait in between each one if it ends up being 10 books. <img src="http://cdn.cl9.vanillaforums.com/downloaded/ver1.0/content/scripts/tinymce/plugins/emotions/images/smiley-tongue-out.gif" border="0" alt="Tongue out" title="Tongue out" />

It had better be only 7 books.  I don't think he's focused enough on the series anymore to write that many additional books.  Also, if he goes to ten books how many characters would really remain??  Not many.

I'm very very excited about True Blood coming back.  Do you read the books?  The last one that just came out went a way I don't like and I'm actively hoping the TV show diverges from the author's intent because I was not a fan.

I'm not a fan of waiting a year for a series to come back but I am thrilled that it was renewed.  I was worried cause so many shows were canceled (though on non cable channels but still!).
  • I wish I had HBO GO - can't get it b/c of my cable provider =(

Aprov - I think I have a GoodReads account but I've never actually used it. Embarassed

I completely agree with you about the latest Sookie Stackhouse book, too. I really enjoyed 1-4 (which is why I'm ridiculously excited about True Blood starting again!) but I'm pretty meh on the books now. I think it was Tide who said that Charlaine Harris jumped the shark about halfway through the series? I agree, and it makes me sad.
