Yikes. Where would it truly end though? Also, I could see the opposite happening with those agreeing with CFA if a huge banfest started. How far do you go to "support" one group without ostracizing the other group? It would be a huge old mess.

What if the Mayor decided he didnt like black people and wouldnt let you open a business because of it? People would be ALL OVER HIM. But because gay rights is such a popular movement here, people dont care about the danger of this over-step of power.

You're right, which is why I don't *actually* agree with it. I think it is the cause-du-jour so it's popular, etc. but yes I totally agree that it sets a bad precedent. I smile only at the idea that it will be hard for them to do business here purely in principle, but not in execution.

  • I'm all for free market, so obviously I agree with you, Blue.

But this isn't just about the CEO's personal beliefs. CFA is a privately owned company and their religious values are integrated in everything they do. Their "Corporate purpose" is: "To glorify God by being a faithful steward of all that is entrusted to us. To have a positive influence on all who come in contact with Chick-fil-A." (http://www.chick-fil-a.com/Pressroom/Fact-Sheets#?release=sunday_2012)

I say that to say that I don't think this directly transferrs into an "ask all the CEOs what their beliefs are" situation.

Yeah, but this doesn't state "WE HATE THE GAYS."

Plus there are plenty of other businesses that are "religious" in their values. http://religion.blogs.cnn.com/2012/07/24/7-religious-companies-besides-chick-fil-a/?iref=storysearch

ETA: Meant to say, plenty of other businesses that are fairly open about their religious stance but aren't being banned from cities. It just happens that the CEOs or talking heads of these companies didn't run their big mouths off.

  • ok I am NOT at all a Menino fan and I agree- he has no right to say anything... but I did like the IDEA of what he was trying to do. He's the mayor of the city and he speaks for the city- I like the idea that the message boston sent was prejudice isn't ok.

That said- you're not wrong- it's the wrong forum for it. But the idea behind it is nice.

normally... maybe not? But given the letter he just put out there... if they get denied a permit, they are going to scream discrimination and show this letter as proof. If Menino had half a brain- he wouldn't have posted this letter and instead fought them quietly.

But he's a moron who wanted to grandstand. I applaud the message totally... but it's just words. He's not going to do anything to get the city sued. The city attorney's are too smart.

hmm THAT I did not know about. What did he disagree with them on? Because disagreeing on religious grounds and then blocking them is DEFINITELY grounds for a suit.

Yeah, I love Boston, but our politicians can be corrupt as all get-out. You really do need to pay people off to get a new liquor license (or be a celeb chef - Ming Tsai and Barbara Lynch are BOTH opening brand new restaurants on A Street and I'm sure their liquor licenses will be readily available.) A few have been caught accepting briberies, but Menino will never be punished.
