Would You Do This?

FI and I went out to buy materials for our Halloween costumes.  We pull up to one of those no-name Halloween stores that pop up around this time of year.  There are no hours on the door, but there is a big sign that says open.  When we walk in, five people shout "We're closed."  FI and I say "Your sign says open."  They told us they already shut the registers down and we'll have to come back.  Now, I worked in retail for years, so I do get how annoying it is when people come in at closing time.  But at the same time, open means open.  FFS, the first thing we did in Express was lock the doors.  Without a sign on the door, we figured they were open until 11 since they had their open sign still up.

My plan is to go back, Pretty Woman style, and have them ring up a shitload of merchandise, call the manager and tell him that's what we would have bought had they been "open" like the sign said.

Would you do this?   FI says I have no shame, which is probably true.

Re: Would You Do This?

  • I think you should do it, and you should report back to us :)
    panther
  • I probably wouldn't do it because I have no balls. However, I agree with AATB. You should do it and report back. I will gladly live vicariously through you.
    image
    image
  • DO IT! and as AATB said, I expect a full report, with pics/ video, if possible.
Image and video hosting by TinyPic "Do not seek the because; in love there is no because, no reason, no explanation, no solutions."
  • The mood I'm in, I'd say that you should do it, then kick them in the face. But that's just me.
  • I doubt I can get pics/video--wouldn't be believable and I'd be too nervous.  But I will definitely do it.  I mean, if I change my mind after they ring up a ton of merchandise, that's not a crime.

FWIW, I know the manager who was there tonight is going to be there this weekend because he said he would.  So I'm not just screwing some innocent cashiers--that I'd feel bad about.
  • I'd do it. If I had money.

And sigh. I worked at Express too Nates. This is just getting a little embarassing.

I went into Old Navy for their $15 jean sale (which I love BTW) but that place was a mad house! I practically got on my knees right in the middle of the store and praised the Lord himself that I wasn't working there! What a nightmare!

People are just so inconsiderate. Hang up your damnn clothes people! Don't pile them up inside-out on the floor! Don't shove armloads of clothes at the attendant! Don't pick up 3 different sizes of jeans in every style you can find - you know what size you are, and if you don't, use ONE or TWO pairs to find out!

I think everyone should be required to work in either retail or the restaurant industry before entering The Real World. Maybe people would be nicer.

  • Jenna- Yeah, during all the really good sales there would be so many people standing outside the door when we would go to unlock them, it was crazy.

I am thankful I dealt mostly in shipment. My shift would start at 6am and I would be done by 3. That 4 hours before the customers came in was so nice. We would bring CD's from home and have dance parties while doing the floor sets. I hated it around the holidays when I would get stuck with crappy busy hours.

I also agree that it should be mandatory to work in retail or restaurants at some point before venturing out. I hate watching people leave random items in places they don't belong and then say "well someone gets paid to put it back". One of my biggest pet peeves! No, I am not getting paid for your disrespectful behavior.

I have not worked in restaurants but I have always believed in tipping well for good service, being polite, and cleaning up as much as you can before you leave the table.

When I worked in restaurants, I always hated the huge messes people's kids would make and they would never clean them up. Now that I have my own messy little guy, I always try to clean up after him. Although, the server ususally catches me and says not to worry about it, but I would feel bad.

  • I am the same way, Led. DS always makes a mess, I always go to clean it, and someone says don't worry about it. I still try and finish cleaning it the best I can.

LOL - The way that I used to get even in retail was if asked for a size get a smaller one or be completely honest if asked my opinion - that is usually not taken well by that kind of people as I have found that they are usually "all about me" and only want to hear that they look fabulous.

As for getting even with the restaurant I would never do anything that could cause someone to be sick but I would maybe catch their chair as I walked past, maybe not serve their drinks as fast as I could or be as helpful as I could have been.

  • I worked in retail for years, so I know all about being polite and still getting even with customers.  In all the years I worked in retail, if we left the doors open with an open sign, we'd serve the customer.

We're gong back this weekend because, having worked in retail, I know it would totally piss me off to ring everything up and then have to void and put it all away.  Since they don't have a corporate office to call and complain, there's really no recourse to complain.

I would act disgustingly, aggressively nice.  That pisses people off more than anything when they are mad.

So if someone was yelling about something I'd say, 'Wow! You're really mad! I'm so sorry that you feel so strongly about these clothes.  It's realllllllyyyy weird because the sign says scarves on sale, not pants.  I can totally see why you'd get sooooooo worked up about it."  And they'd invariably say "I'm NOT ANGRY!" while screaming.  It was the best.
  • .....or just pay attention to the manners they were taught.

I doubt that's a good idea, unless you're planning on leaving with the merchandise. Most Halloween stores are no returns, period. Even if it's unopened. And I'm guessing if you piss them off at the counter, they're likely to not make an exception in the least.

I think she means after they ring up everything, but before she pays. Then there is nothing to return because nothing was actually purchased.

Ugh, seriously. I hate when I see people leave stuff around at restaurants where you bus your own table. Would you just leave a bunch of dirty dishes as spilled food on your table at home and walk away? I think not.

Same with how some people treat public restrooms. *shudder*

  • Opening late really is shiity though.  If someone shows up the minute you are supposed to open, it's usually for a reason.

My old gym opened at 5:30, and I had to be gone by 6 because I worked an hour away and I had to get ready for work.  The guy who opened was constantly late.  I'm already only getting a 30 minute workout, 20 minutes isn't even worth showing up for.  I can think of some other examples.  If someone's at Starbucks at 5AM, it's because it's the only way they have time to go before (work, gym, getting kids ready for school, insert whatever else here).

Yes, I probably would feel better, but I'm a mean bitch like that.  Thank you, though, for that lesson in how to behave.

Anyway, moral of the story: take down the open sign if you've been closed for 20 minutes.
