1. Favorite kind of soup? White bean with smoked ham

2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Reuben with extra russian dressing

3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? Does drank count?  When I was offered the position at my job, I was toasted by a good family friend with a $700 bottle of wine.  It was good but at the time I feel like I was more wrapped up in being employed and drinking away a lot of money to really savor it.

4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? No and I don't think I could.

5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them. I loved, loved, loved this sweet potato and peanut butter stew that I had while in southern Africa.  I did NOT love the live locust that I ate a couple days later.
• 1. Favorite kind of soup? Potato
2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Turkey, cheddar, and lettuce.  I also love grilled cheese.
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? A couple really good filet mignons.
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? I grew up on a farm (a hobby, not for income), and my parents once butchered a lamb.  My mom shoved it in the freezer and wouldn't eat it for the longest time, so we never did that again.
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them. I loved the croque monsiour I had in Paris and the shepherd's pie I had in London.  I'm pretty lame like that, though.
• 1. Favorite kind of soup? Tomato
2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Ruebens. Oh, and JJ's Turkey Tom with avocado.
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? That's a good question, probably Ichiban in general. All of the food is so delicious, and way too expensive.
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? Just fishing, and I never cleaned them. H is going deer hunting next week, and I already told him he better have it cleaned and processed before he gets back. I will also not be eating any.
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them. Well the only place I been out of the US is Mexico. I have volunteered in Tijuana and all the families we worked with cooked us amazing meals.

• 1. Favorite kind of soup? Tom Kha (thai, spicy, coconut milk based)
2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Not big on sandwiches... grilled cheese?
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate?Filet mignon at a ski lodge.
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal?Yes, a chicken.
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them.I have been to France and I love all of their food, but mostly (of course) the cheese and bread. I have been trying to find stuff like it ever since, but even exported from France it doesn't taste the same :(
They would have cheese platters for dessert, but my favorite was the spreadable cheese in the morning with a roll. I have heard a French person describe American cheese and bread as dead and France's alive. It sounds arrogant, but it is the best way to describe it.
Bad thing about French food: they had flavored water. It was really really gross. Like a powder or fluid you mix in, and it only came in two flavors: mint and cherry. They all drank it and always offered it to me, I politely drank a few, but the mint was excruciating.

1. Favorite kind of soup?
Lobster bisque or corn chowder. Though call.

2. Favorite kind of sandwich?
Peanut Butter. If not that, smokes turkey with just american cheese and lettuce on plain ol' white or french bread.

3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate?
Probably the dinner I had at the Social House in Treasure Island in Vegas. It's a sushi place, which was odd for me since I'm not a HUGE fish fan, and I very rarely eat raw fish. FI and I went with a friend of ours, and all of the ordering was on him since we didn't have a clue really what any of it was. The friend basically told the waiter to bring us samplers of all the best stuff.

Going into it, I was kinda freaked out that I'd leave there starving from being too grossed out to eat any of it. It was phenomenal! I've said I'm now ruined for trying sushi anywhere else because it won't live up to what I had there.

I never did find out what the final bill was, but I can pretty well guarantee that that meal was at the top of the most expensive ones for me.

4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal?
Many times. I grew up hunting, as well as working on my granparents' ranch during the summers. When my dad was teaching me about hunting and fishing, one of the first 'rules' was 'you kill it, you clean it'.

At the ranch I didn't really do any butchering, but helping to pull a calf out during birth is pretty similar *eeww*

5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them.
In Australia, I tried crocodile and kangaroo. The crocodile was a lot like chicken (surprise surprise), but with a little tougher texture. Really good with some citrus drizzled on. The kangaroo was similar to antelope or maybe elk (if anyone's ever had those). I really liked it.

In Italy, even though it's not really 'foreign,' every pizza I had was great. As well as gnocchi. I haven't found any place in the states yet that is super close to what I had there. And the gelato! The stuff I have in the states that they try to call gelato is nothing but icy sorbet.

In the Bahamas, I tried calamari for the first time. A little creepy, that's for sure, since we not only got the rings of the hood, but the whole little ones. I had to admit it was pretty good. Also there, I had conch. A little chewier than I expected, but pretty close to how the calamari was. Or an abalone.

I'm sure there's more, but I'm verging on a novel here lol.

• I think we need a poll...

1. Favorite kind of soup? New England Clam Chowder (preferably homemade!)
2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Chicken Salad
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? Hmm... we went all out for our first anniversary and went to Wolfgang Puck's restaurant. We had calamari, quail and pumpkin gnocchi. AMAZING!
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? No - I'm totally a meat eater but I couldn't do the actual butchering. Yuck.
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them.
Well I did have a goat roast in Africa. The day after coming down from Mount Kilimanjaro so my stomach was already a little queasy seeing the goad all done up and roasted (standing, fur still on) didn't help so much. But I tried it and it was decent - tasted just like you think goat would!

My favorite African meal was one our climb guide Yusef's wife made us.  It was a feast of all their favorite dishes - very Africa and very awesome.

In Amsterdam I had the best hot chocolate I've ever had in my life. OH EM GEE! So freaking good.

• 1. Favorite kind of soup? Butternut squash!
2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Tie: Reuben & Grilled cheese.
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? A whole bunch of foie gras in Canada (I know, controversial).
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? Yes, have hunted quail and fished.
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them. Chicken feet (not sure if that would be my "favorite" tho...); Cabeza (head) (TWSS Wink); 1000-year-old egg (tastes just like a normal egg and thus is good); A lot of RANDOM things in Japan, but the best sushi ever, yum.
Speaking of, this one place in, I think, Osaka had:
Horse Sushi (yes)
but I refused to try it, I'm fairly adventurous but I couldn't do it.  Actually it's making me feel a little queasy remembering that scene.
• 1. Favorite kind of soup? Ooh that's tough. I think lobster bisque or french onion are my faves.

2. Favorite kind of sandwich? Again, that's hard. Grilled cheese with bacon and tomato is probably the best to me.

3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate? I think just seafood upon seafood. Yum. I love lobster and clams, mussels and even just sushi in general.

4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? Hells no. Unless, hitting or running over one in my car counts?   : (

5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them. The potatoes in Ireland really are the best potatoes I've ever had. But even without traveling, I love Thai and Mexican food too.
• 1. Favorite kind of soup?  Tomato
2. Favorite kind of sandwich?  Grilled cheese with green chile.  With a bowl of question #1.
3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate?  probably a $40 steak at a restaurant in Houston.  It was delicious.
4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal? No. Never will
5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them.  In Belize I ate conch fritters.  They were amazingly good.

• 1. Favorite kind of soup?
Can: New England Clam Chowder
Homemade: Chicken soup with matzo balls.  Or cream of celery.

2. Favorite kind of sandwich?
Roast beef & swiss on a hard sourdough roll with lettuce, tomato, mustard & mayo.  The roll is really important, I like it much less on sliced bread of any kind.

3. Most expensive/decadent thing you ever ate?
Don't remember the exact item, but I had a couple birthday lunches at the upstairs restaurant/cafe (somewhat less formal) at Chez Panisse.  I've never done dinner there because I don't like not having a choice of what I order.

4. Have you ever killed/butchered an animal?
Nope.  I'm urban-bred and squeamish, I don't even like to eat recognizable parts of the animal (like tongue or organs).

5. Bonus Q for those who travel: name your favorite foreign things you have tried and tell us all about them.
My only travel abroad was visiting my dad when I was 7 while he was doing a fellowship in Italy.  It was my first experience with gnocchi and gianduia gelato, which are both things I love and thankfully see in the store much more often these days!

• Oh right, the post about crocodile reminded me, in New Orleans we also have alligator gumbo/jerky. It's good! A little tough. Smile
• kd- I am now picturing you like Cleopatra, only instead of milk and honey, you bathe in butternut squash soup! Also, I'm strangely fascinated by old European nastiness like blood sausage and head cheese. Not fascinated enough to eat it, but still. Have you ever seen After Hours with Daniel Bouchard? Excellent show for said fascination.

kp- quite the traveller!

pixie- I could probably listen to your Mount Killiminjaro stories all day.

All of the "I've only been to Mexico"'s- ummm, yeah, last time I checked Mexico had amazing food. Dish it out. What was it and why was it amazing?

• Aw thanks Reddy! I could probably tell them all day. haha

I do have cool food stories from on the mountain but not exotic food stories because the food that the cook made on the mountain were ridiculously normal and delicious. The cook (Raziki) literally made us stuffed pizza and chicken wings on day 4 at 13,000feet and with one burner to cook over. WHAT?!?! He's amazing.
That takes some skill! I don't know anything about high altitudes, but doesn't water boil super fast (or is it super slow?) and wouldn't cooking be different or hard up there?
Posted by reddy123
Yep! It boils faster because it boils at a lower temperature which makes cooking food way harder! This guy is a genius I swear- he should be a food network show. He also made us delicious soup everyday, ommlettes for breakfast, tacos, FRENCH FRIES!!, fried chicken and pasta. They wanted us to have food we were used to because our bodies were already dealing with a lot. It was absolutely unbelievable. Sometimes I crave some of Raziki's food. haha

I know what you mean about the cheese in France. One of our favorite nights in Paris was sitting at a cafe eating a cheese plate with wine. And following it with a chocolate mousse and coffee.

And once we left Paris we flew to Ireland and stayed at the Bunratty Inn where the food was phenomenal, that's where I had the soup.
But our dinner at Tristan in Charleston,SC was by far the best. Oh and I forgot the sandwich I had at Josephs in Charleston. It was ham, brie, and stone ground mustard on a croissant with a side of fried green tomatoes.

I have been more adventurous about food since I met DH.
