Cherry chip cake

I'd never even heard of this until recently. A good friend of mine moved here from Michigan and she said its her favorite. Her birthday is Thursday and I want to make one for her. The ones I've found online are varying as far as reviews. Does anyone have a tried and true recipe?

Its sold as a "box cake" mix in some stores. My roommates mom makes cherry chip chocolate chip cookies with the mix but I just can't seem to find the mix in stores up here. But the cookies are delicious.

I love cherry chip cake!  I forgot it existed.  i think I had one for my 3rd birthday and it had cream cheese icing.  yum!

No, I don't have a recipe for it, but I'd go with the AllRecipes recipe for it:

Any negative reviews seems to be because they don't know that that is the way the cake is supposed to turn out.  Pretty dense and not that pretty unless you frost it.  i'd use a thicker cream cheese icing and put sprinkles on top.

When she said cherry chip, I was confused. It must be a regional thing. It sounds yummy though!

Ok, thanks Anna! Thats the exact recipe I was looking at, but the reviews worried me. Mmm! Cream cheese icing sounds divine.

Not a clue. They looked like chocolate chips, but were red, and the bag said cherry chips.

Anna - that recipe looks yummy, but it looks way different than the cookie/cake mix roomie's mom uses. I believe I will have to try both recipies.
