I voted

And thank goodness my parents bought me one of these as a child, or I would have never figured it out:

Have you voted? Some guy in the parking lot tried to hand my mom an "I Voted" sticker when she was walking to stand in line, and she acted like he was trying to hand her a sack of turds.

I didn't, because I am ignorant of who the candidates are. Heck, I don't even know what they are running for.  I freely admit to my ignorance. I refuse to vote based on whose name I like the best.

  • I filled out my baseball All-Star ballot soley based on the names that I liked. Fukudome FTW.

  • I'm annoyed with our elections.  Because I'm a journalist I've met all the statewide candidates and I don't really like any of them.  I usually find myself voting AGAINST someone rather than FOR someone.  Meh.

  • Well, I just found out that I can register in Wisconsin on Election Day at the polling place, so I'm going to try to get my ducks in a row to do that. I was kinda eh about voting, and I'm not a Democrat or anything, but I'd feel bad if Russ Feingold lost by two votes. So yeah.

  • I'm voting on Tuesday, but I'll probably write in for my dog. She'd be a better leader than the dummies around here. There are no worthy candidates in my area- for anything. I don't want to not vote, but I hate all of the candidates.

A guy that works for H said he hates Obama and everything about him because of his name. He said the name Barack Hussein Obama means he is a terrorist, otherwise he would have a regular name. He also said that if he were named Jack or Harry or George that he would trust him.

This guy is a total idiot, and a racist to boot. I still haven't figured out why H keeps him around, I guess because he works hard because he needs the money and he'll do whatever you tell him to do.

  • Ok, so here's what one of our independent candidates for governor had to say. I refuse to believe that she actually had someone proof it before she submitted it to LWV:
I have sold insurance, owned and operated a moving company, adolescents, run a group home for disturbed adolescents and taught kindergarten. I put a son through college, a daughter through nursing school. I know what meeting payroll means, keeping within budget, doing hard work and being where the buck stops.

    Apparently she sells adlocescents. Nice

Well, in her defense, she could also be trying to say that she has owned and operated adolescents.

I voted.  I thought with early voting, I wouldn't get ambushed with campaign people.  Wrong.  Ugh.  I wanted to be like, "do I look like an idiot who shows up to vote and doesn't know who I'm going to vote for?"  Nah, don't answer that.

    Posted by rhonwynv[/QUOTE]

This is an interesting issue to me. I think if it were even enacted (which I'm sure it wouldn't be) it would GREATLY change the makeup of the voting public and things would be quite chaotic. In terms of polling, who gets voted in and out, etc. We would have no idea how the elections would turn out until after they were over. It's an exciting, yet scary though.

On one hand, I don't think people should be forced to vote, but on the other, I can't think of a good reason someone wouldn't vote.

I've lived in a few coutnries where voting was cumpulsory, in various formats.  (Forced to register; not forced to register but forced to vote if registered, etc.)

For example, my ex was from a country where *if* you registered to vote, you were obligated to vote.  A lot of young people disagreed, so there was a disproportionate number of older voters.  One problem was that young people were more mobile than older people (going off to university, etc) but the process to change your registration was long and bureucratic.  So I had friends that would have to travel 12 hrs to go back to their hometowns to vote. No absentee ballots.

Interesting ideas I've notices from (casually) observing elections in other places:
-Voting days are national holidays.  (This allows everyong the opportunity to vote.  The downfall to that is that there is usually a no-alcohol-sold-on-voting-day that goes along with it, so that meant no booze to drink after you were done voting!)

-Media black-outs. A certain number of days before the elections, media were not allowed to broadcast political commercials, etc.  This was in a place where there was lots of shaowy campaining, so the idea was if no one is allowed to say anything, there can be no lying.

-Gender-separated polling places. This was in a somewhat macho country.  They have polling places for men, polling places for women.  Supposedly this would prevent men from influencing and intimidating women  at the polling booth. Staff at the polling places was also same gender.

Not endorsing any of these, just things I've noticed while living overseas.

Yup.  I wish more people who didnt follow the candidates/policies etc wouldnt vote.  I know so many people who just go and vote along party lines just because they are a part of that party.
