Do you keep a journal or diary?

Out of curiosity, do you keep some sort of journal or diary?

I kept a diary religiously from 8th grade until I graduated college. After college I would write about once a year, if that. I'm thinking of starting up again to figure out some emotions as well as keep a dream journal because I've been having a lot of weird ones lately (a lot revolving around an ex which disturbs me).

Re: Do you keep a journal or diary?

  • I've tried before but I really, really suck at it.
  • I tried when I was younger.  I was about as good at it as I am with my blog.  I wrote in it maybe once every few months.  I stopped trying after a few attempts.  Reading through it a few years ago was fun, though.

And betrothed, I'm disgusted with most of the comments that you have posted. I don't think I've ever read such judgmental comments in my life. I'm so lucky that the girls I speak to on theknot are nothing like you...I would've never come on here for ADVICE if I would've encountered a big a bitch as you. I genuinely feel awful for your children or your future children, and I think it would be irresponsible of YOU not to invest in their future therapy sessions starting now. Because trust me when I tell you honey, they're gonna need it. ~jcaruncho2010

  • No... but my grandfather kept a journal during WWII when he was stationed in the Pacific.  My mom has them now and I'm dying to read them.
  • OOOH, I do I do!

My first was for about six months when I was in third grade.  Then I started up in 6th grade again - and I've never stopped.  It's so cool because more than half of my life is documented - and its SO fun to go back and read through it and watch myself grow up.

The best thing is, my fiance and I were each other's first boyfriend/girlfriend in 7th grade, and continued off and on throughout high school.  It's so adorable to read about us all those years ago.

Keeping a journal is an excellent way to sort out your emotions.  I used to write a hell of a lot more than I do now (in high school I kept several different journals for several different things, other than my regular "life" journal).  Now it's usually once or twice a week.

  • Nah, I'm bad at keeping up with stuff like that. I envy people who can, though.

  • I only write when I'm upset or need to sort through my feelings.  Other than that, I'm terrible about keeping a journal.  I always neglect it.
  • AATB - My "once a month" one is hilarious to read. Sept 15th, 2007 "OMG I just got promoted as a Pet Care Manager at my store! I'm so excited. I love my job. It is so great to take care of all of the animals and be able to help customers"
June 2008 "I fvcking hate my job. Everything keeps dying and I can't figure out why and I just want to tell my bosses to go fvck themselves. Them and the stupid rich biitch asssed customers."

    Oh how quickly it happens...lol
  • I did throughout high school.  I actually found it when I was packing last summer and was sort of sick to my stomach.  I was such a tool.

  • I did for all of middle school til my freshman year in college.. then every six months or so. Just the other day I went back and read through all of them (4).

It was very entertaining. So positive I'd marry my high school boyfriend at 14, til 17(even though he was a lying ass as my diary told me) and all that fun stuff!

  • LOL Exactly.  When I first got my reporting job out of college I was so optimistic and excited and full of all this ethical journalistic optimism.  Now when I write about my job I'm always complaining about my co-workers, other colleagues in the media or how clueless our director is.

    Ah, life :)

  • I think it's also helpful to read through when I was a really depressed teen. I thought for sure that I would be alone forever and no one would ever love me. I just want to give my 16 year old self a hug.
  • I do write down my dreams most of the time

I hear that.  I wish I had the attention span to keep a diary.  I have a therapist that I work out all my emotional issues with though so maybe that's why I don't need one?

  • I did all through high school and i love reading through them now and then.
I try to do it every once in a while still but now i don't keep up with it.
  • I have an online diary (at opendiary.com, although the site is pretty useless it's got a great community of people there). I've had online journals through that site since I was 16 (so, 11 years now), but my current journal was one I started when I was 18.
  • I have a journal but I only write in it on my "extreme" days, when I really really sad or upset and when I'm really really joyful/excited.

  • I had one from the age I learned how to read/write through freshman year of college.

I kept sort of a journal when I was doing Mind over Mood in therapy.  I'd like to start it up again.
