People Names

I'm not KU, but thinking about names of people hatchlings.  I think I only like names that could be deemed cruel like Willamina and Cecil.  Do you think you have weird taste in names?

<div>We heard the name Winston in a movie a week or two ago and thought that might be awesome. </div><div>
</div><div>We also overheard some old guy years ago talk about the name "Avery" so we've always wanted Avery but now a lot of people are naming their girl Avery. </div>
  • I like "older" names, like Stella or June or Astrid or Joyce for girls.  When we start a family, I have a feeling I'll be shot down.

  • Awww.  NS hatchlings :)

I do, but that's more of an effort to not have my children have to go through what M and I went through growing up; every class I was in had 3 Jennifers/Michaels.  I do not, however, support the bastardizing of traditional spellings to be cool and YOU-NEEK.

I love Gideon, but I don't think I would name my child that.

  • I also really like Astrid and Soron/Soren (Swedish)

For Stella, I just can't get over the Streetcar Named Desire connotations.  Marlon Brando yelling that name in the night.

My friend told me that Willamina is like vagina.  Frown

  • FI and I are considering naming a boy Delbert, after my grandfather.  And I really like the name Walter, I think a little baby Walter would be adorable.

  • Well, I once told FI that I wanted to name our first son Percy Oliver Wentworth, but that's only because I was teasing him by trying to come up with the most bully-prone name either.

I kind of want to follow in FMIL's tradition of giving her kids classic and strong names that can become adorable nicknames. Her boys are Edward, Charles, and James, but they're called Teddy, Charlie, and Jamie. And Charlie's last name really lends itself well to that sort of thing.

  • I love the name Ayla, which is a book character. And Sebastian, Gabriel, Kariss, Evangeline. So, I guess I do like less-than-normal names.
  • STELLAAAAAAAAAAAAA.  :)

I like Estelle too.  Which reminds me of Estelle from Friends, Joey's agent, with her raspy smoker's voice.  "Hey, Joey?  THIS IS ESTELLE."  But I still like the name.

  • DH and I were/are seriously considering Connor for a 2nd boys name.  Problem is that we may want to use John/Jonathan as a middle name, after my dad, so it doesn't really work.  BUT, DH thinks John Connor would be a fabulous name.

My friends named their daughter Ayla after the character.  Not weird at all considering their son is Anakin.

That's where I feel like it's kind of a mean thing to do.  I guess he could go by Del, not Bert.  Or we could try to give a middle name that we could use initials.  He could go by Delbert, but then I would always think of my grandma saying "Dag blasted Delbert, why on earth would you do that." It kind of makes me smile</div>

  • I like Romanian names like Mirella, Irina and Elena. I love Mihaela, but I fear people would butcher it and make it Makayla, which it isn't. Me Hi Ella is the proper pronunciation and I think its beautiful. For the boys, though, I am not so impressed.

FI's name is Razvan, which has no latin or english translation of any kind, and absolutley no meaning. It was made up by the Roma distinctly for that reason. They wanted no connection to the church or their conquerers. His dad's name is Ion, (Yon) which is the equivalent of John, but then again I fear a butchering. I will not name my child after an atomic particle. I haven't really thought of many boy names, though.

There's always making it a middle name. I wanted to name a kid Stanley after my old choir director who died, who was an amazing person and would make an excellent namesake for a kid, but FI isn't into it, but he likes the idea of making it a middle name. So that is pretty much set.

  • FI and I like pretty generic names Christian, Alexander, Madison (I know, so popular, it's like the Jennifer for the 2000s) etc. If I had it my way, I'd secretly name a daugther Aurora Leigh after my favorite epic poem (Rory for a nickname) and a son Nathaniel Patrick. But no way would FI let those fly, esp. the first one.

  • Also, I strongly suggest that parents consider how other people will screw up your childs name.  I have been called Daria, Dana, Dora (the explorer), Dare (to keep kids off drugs), Dorsey (that's a long story), Darla, my KY family calls me Daryl but I think that's mostly an accent thing, and of course the wrong way to actually pronounce my name.  And my name isn't really that difficult.

  • If i were a boy, I'd have been Trevor David and they kept that name for my younger sister, too. Therefore, a boy will get David (dad's name) for a middle name.

I have no idea what it means, I thought Jean Auel made it up. One of my mom's friends named their kind Jondayla, which was what Ayla and Jondalar named their baby in the last book. Man, now I really, really want to reread those books. They are fantastic.

Also, poor kid, being named Anakin. And I kind of love Dell.
  • Because of all the You Neek spellings of my name, no one can spell my name right. It's so simple, but everyone butchers it by coming up with weird, random letters to throw in there. So I'm very much against You Neek and made-up names. I prefer classic, simple names, but my bf prefers names that were popular in our generation.

As long as you don't mind that I "stole" you name, I may talk to DH about it.  We are so-so on Gwendolyn Leigh.  My BFF is named Gwendolyn, and originally, I wanted to use it to pay tribute to her, however, it may just be weird - like if I were yelling at her, I would be yelling at my friend; "Gwendolyn Leigh - get your butt downstairs right now!"  I don't know.

FI's step-gma is from Nicaragua, so she spelled my name on a favor last year the way she pronounces it:  "Maritza."  It was awesome.

[QUOTE]Sometimes people are just stupid and can't read.  My name is Danielle, but lots of people have called me Daniel (do I look like a dude?), there's also been Danell, or Danny-elle. How can you screw up Danielle?  Really?

Ugh, I feel your pain. I get Kristin, Christine, Kristi, Tina, even Katrina. How effing hard is it to just read the name in front of you? It makes me irrationally mad to be called Christine by people who have known me longer than a week. So I've started saying "a" (kind of pronounced 'uh') when they call me Christine.  It takes them a second, but they eventually catch on.
