Check your flashcards. 3rd from the bottom, near the one that has the definition of "clueless" with a photo of sophistry holding her Masters in Philosophy degree.
  • Originally, yeah but that's not the common definition now and hasn't been for a long, long time.  Just seems an unusual choice to me, but carry on.

Is it bad that it took me until just now to realize that her sn was Sophistry Liz and not Sophi Stryliz. Who's got two thumbs and hasn't been paying attention? This girl!
  • People who study philosophy are a bit different.  That's all I'm going to say about it.  If you don't study it, you can't really say "a long long time ago blah blah it meant something else, but it doesn't today." The word is not commonly used today anyway--that's why I assumed no one knew what it meant.  It comes from a somewhat nihilistic school of thought that interests me.  k.
  • Also, I spent no money on my big expensive degree.
  • Oh yeah? Well, I have a big, expensive, fancy, free, degree too. I have my PhD in Phunk. So, eat it!
  • I do not think you should ask a person to be a replacement bridesmaid. Someone did that to me a couple years ago. My MOH and her family are like my family. So when her brother was having his wedding the bride asked all of the family and a couple family friends to be in the wedding. Pretty much everyone we hang out with except for me. It hurt a little but I got over it. About a month before her wedding, the friend that was not part of the family pretty much told her to go screw because of her ridiculous demands on her BP and dropped out of the wedding. It wasnt until then she asked me to be in the BP. I was hurt, upset, and felt like a replacement. I did it because the dress deposit was already down and I'm a sucker. I should have also told her to go screw.

What does the present definition of the word have to do with whether or not I or anyone else studied philosophy?  The definitions of words change over time. Look at words like lame and gay.  I'm not the one who defined sophism as fallacy.  You can blame that on Mr. Webster.

  • You don't need to replace her.  If you are concerned about having an uneven number of groomsmen vs. bridesmaids, don't worry, many people have different numbers for each side.  Even if your friend is a really good friend that you want to ask at the last minute, it is a lot to ask her to be the "back up," and to spend a lot of money on a dress she did not get to help pick out almost immediately.  If you want to include her, have her help with the guest book or some other task, but to ask her to be a BM is a little much.

  • Sophistry, I know people generally ignore my comments, but please go back to the earlier thread where I explained that the use of the word "Sophist", and thereby sophistry, are derogatory terms. I'm sorry if you live in the past, but I prefer to communicate effectively with others, using modern laguages.

  • Oh holy hell, Sarah. You better be sending some of those Peepushis my way.
  • They would probably be better after a few days in the mail, because Peeps are always better stale.

  • You are so sweet. I actually think I might attempt making them myself. My little man would love this kind of thing. Will you let me know how easy / hard they are to do? I think it would be an awesome Easter project.
  • I will. I'll PM you tonight with the results. There will be adults and wine involved, though, so we may take some creative liberties!

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Freaking out...BM can't make wedding now; advice, please! : Um, hi. I know I'm on the snarky board but could you tone down the judgement just a little bit? I found out 1 hour ago that my sister is going to be in jail during my wedding which is a pretty big deal.

I'm sorry--I have to say it: Yeah, it is a big deal that your sister is going to jail, such a big deal in fact that I'm a little surprised that your first concern was about your wedding and what to do about having an even number of bridesmaids.

  • I was a BM in a wedding where one of the groomsmen ended up in the hospital.  One groomsman escorted 2 bridesmaids and everything worked out just fine, until the first dance, when one of us was odd chick out (me!).  My then-boyfriend stepped in and we danced together for the first dance.

  • I think you just move on without her. In my wedding, I had 2 bridesmaid and 4 groomsmen. It doesn't have to be equal. You can figure out a way to make it work :)
