I was going to comment in your other thread but I dunno if you're still keeping up with it.

I am doing news stories on a "freeze" that took place on a local college campus today.  The college kids wore purple and froze in place for three minutes to I guess circulate awareness of bullying of the LGBTQ community, and it's supposed to encourage people to talk about it, and create a more accepting atmosphere.

Are people doing this where you live?

Yes, queer.  Some people say LGBT, others say LGBTQ, a kid I talked to today said LGBTA...

Queer or Questioning depending on who you ask. Sometimes you'll see it as LGBTQQA (Lesbian, Gay, Transgendered, Queer, Questioning, Ally) but that's just getting a bit out of hand lol.

I hadn't heard of this whole freeze thing in my area. That's pretty awesome and it got your attention so mission accomplished. Love it, thanks for sharing!

Yeah it was pretty neat - obviously not everyone was participating, but another student I talked to was handing out purple arm bands.  She said she gave a presentation to a class of about 100 people and afterwards, 70 students came up and got arm bands to wear in support of their LGBT peers.  She was pretty amazed.  I was too.

My kids do the Day of Silence every year.  Quite a bit participate, too, so it's very cool to see.  I also work in a district with amazing kids who are pretty tolerant.

When I was in college there was a "Walk Out," where kids walked out in the middle of class.  But hardly anyone did it.

Typically I'm not for walk-outs because kids tend to join in just to be dramatic or leave school.  I admire the kids who do the DoS because it takes a lot of willpower to maintain silence throughout the day, including lunch, and I think they're really learning something there.

I heard about this on FB this morning when I was drinking my coffee. I was bummed because I have to wear a uniform at work and have no purple undies with me on deployment.

I do have a purple shirt that says "Strawberry Fields Forever" on it, maybe I'll wear that tonight when I get off work.

I think that 3-minute freeze is really cool. Any particular reason for that amount of time and not a full 5 minutes? Just curious.

It reminds me of when I was in high school and they'd do the demonstration about drunk driving, where every fifteen minutes, a grim reaper would come into one of the classrooms and take one of the students out (usually ASB kids). They'd go to the Leadership room and paint all their faces white like skeletons then send them back to class but they weren't allowed to speak or interact with any of us. Then at the end of the day we'd have an assembly and they'd bring out all the students who "died" that day. It was pretty moving.

I did ask them about the time limit mehgan - the freeze actually began at 11:52 am, and went for three minutes - it started then, and wasn't longer because of students needing to get to class.  So it wasn't any special significance really - pure logistics.

I've been trying to notice if kids here are participating in the purple thing, but purple is our school color, so its hard to tell. I do know that we have a few LGBT students, but most of them aren't out, or prefer to not be identified by their sexual orientation at all, so there probably wasn't a big movement. 

Its interesting that I have heard from the administration that we don't have any gay students. I'm pretty sure the 2 chicks I saw making out in the parking lot were not just best friends.

Students at my high school did a Day of Silence for something, can't remember what, but I side-eyed almost all of them. It was only the kids in our IB program, and it just so happened to fall on the same day as a major oral exam that many had been bitching extra study time for. They even duct-taped their mouths shut and teachers couldn't do anything about it. I found it hard to believe in their so-called cause.

But this, I wish I had known about. I would have worn something purple.

That's the same reason I don't support walk-outs.  I know a bunch of kids would just do it to get out of class.  At least when my kids do the DoS, they know that they can be called on and expected to participate (especially if there was a test or something).  I find it more meaningful when they are quiet during their free time because they really struggle there.

I think some kids wonder if I'm a lesbian because I'm very involved in LGBT stuff and I don't really hide that.  Little do they know, one of their favorite teachers (one of my closest friends) really is gay.

I think some of my friends in college thought I was a lesbian, because I was also really involved with the LGBT community. Although one of my gay guys friends confessed to me after college that he tried to will himself into liking vaginas because he thought I would be fun to date and he didn't want to disappoint me by not putting out. All I could say was "You like penises way too much for this to happen. Please stop looking at vaginas trying to like them."

I love US of Tara, awesome show, I thought of the same thing with the purple armbands.

Thanks for posting this AATB, seems like there is some hope for the future. Perhaps by the time these kids are the ones running our government I'll be able to have a federally recognized marriage.

I kind of wish I did *more* today. I saw a coworker wearing purple and she kinda smiled at me, could have been a coincidence. I'm only out to the 4 people in my immediate group at work. But I also don't hide who I am, if any asks, I'll tell them (that's how 2 of the 4 people found out). I wear my engagement ring every day and I'll wear my wedding band too. But I wish I could have done something to let people know about the day in the office. I wish my 29 year old self was as brave as my 17 year old self, I was totally out in HS, even brought a girl to prom with me. Now I just don't talk about my personal life at work. My 17 year old self thinks it's pretty lame.

The look of vag grosses me out anyway.  But most of my guy (gay) friends have had the same experience.

One of the lesbian girls from my high school (her name was Crystal) was in Seventeen magazine because she was voted Prom King at our school. I actually remember people thinking I was a lesbian because I hung out with her and two of our guy friends who were gay on our bus to and from school everyday. I didn't deny the rumors because I just thought it was funny how no one actually asked me if I was gay or straight, they just assumed that about me since I hung out with them. It didn't cause me any anguish; we just laughed about it. Crystal would look at me and be like "I hate that you love the c0ck" and we'd die laughing.

Considering that we'd known about the exam and had about 4 months to prepare for it, yeah, they were bitching. They didn't want study time, they wanted the test pushed back and hopefully cancelled. These were not students who actually used extra time on schoolwork.
