Re: I really loved this article

  • Huh, I never really thought about this. But now that I do, I saw it with every photographer that I didn't choose. Our wedding photographer put up pictures of every single client he worked with. Maybe, subconsciously, this is why I was drawn to his pictures. He was only a part-time photog, and had only been in the business a few years, but his pictures were the most real. Plus he was cheap.

It makes me feel better about choosing a less chic  photog eventhough my photog friend kept sending me links to sites filled with "beautiful people".
  • Yeah I mean, I don't know how much of this applies to every photographer, but I do think it is a really interesting concept. Maratea, you make a good point about what people's subconscious is drawn to. You wonder how 'real people' shots help or hinder business and if the photog even realizes they are posting some pics over others.
  • she (i'm assuming the blogger is a she) is right. i've been on a million wedding photographer sites in the past few months (i just like creeping on wedding photos, really), and with the exception of two very "indie" (but still awesome) photographers' websites, i've seen no plus-sized, crooked-toothed, post-30, or homosexual couples. and i never realized it until now. i feel sad about that. but glad we didn't book any of them.

  • I thought my photographer blogged all her shoots...until she didn't blog our engagement shoot. I don't know if it was because she didn't like the shots, or if we aren't 'pretty enough' but I did think about it. Maybe I should forward her this article...I wonder what she would say...
  • I loved this article.  Photos are one of the most important things to me, so we wanted to get that booked very early so it wasn't an issue.  We met so many photographers and I thought the same thing--yeah, you can take an amazing picture of models.  Good for you.

I'm so happy we found the girl we're using.  She's committed to capturing the depth of every relationship on film, not just the super pretty ones.
  • I think it's an absolutely wonderful article.  I loved it deep down in my loving place.

  • Number you are just darling, I doubt that was the reason :) I definitely don't think every couple who is not blogged is ugly or something and I don't think every couple that is blogged is just for show of business - but the article did strike some chords that seems right.
  • I agree with Maratea, I went with a photojournalist who cared for the emotions, and definitely not the size, that's probably why he's still hot off the press, and fully booked for the year :)

I kind of started seeing the same poses, so fake and so not real, and I didn't want those kind of poses to be remembered for a lifetime

  • This article reminds me that I have not seen one goddamn professinal photograph, and my wedding was over a month ago.

Well, he posted a couple on facebook, but I had to untag myself in one because it was majorly unflattering.

  • I went back and looked at my photographer's website after reading this article and felt even better about having booked him.  :)

  • I like whoever wrote this.  Preach!
  • well I emailed my photographer and asked how she decides what to blog. I mentioned that we were discussing the article (which I attached) on a wedding forum. I will let you know what I hear back...
  • So true.

I'm happy to report my photog passes the test.  His wife did my makeup, and I remember her saying something about how she would comment on how beautiful a particular bride was, and Agie would be really aloof about it and comment more on the artistic qualities of the photo.  I didn't really get it then, but I guess I do now.
  • The most popular photographer on my local board was the most fake fakey person I've ever met. Ugh. Fi and I RAN from that appointment. She was expensive too.

My photographer is super cool. She does band photography, lives in this shack near the beach, and shot photos for a charity calendar in Nicaragua.

  • I really like this article cause hell- its true. Every photography site I looked at had shots of posh, perfect looking people lacking any flaws looking gloriously happy. Normal people are not flawless... and hell the real stuff is more beautiful anyways.

You know? This is a bit off topic, but I feel this away about most of the vendors people think are SO great on my local (especially CapeCod). I am not saying I have met all of them, but I am often left wondering what the heck the draw is for people.

okay...so here is what I wrote to her:

I have a quick question that I thought you might be able to answer for me: how do you choose which shoots to blog as a photographer? I had thought that you blogged them all until I noticed that you didn't blog our engagement shoot (not that I worried about it per se, just realized that you didn't blog about all of the couples/weddings you shoot).

I ask because on a wedding forum I frequent we were discussing this article and it made me think about it. I thought maybe I would ask you.

    and her response was:

I do not blog all my shoots as there are just too many. Its never about one being better than another. And trust me I get asked by a lot of clients why I didn't blog theirs. Because I am a photographer who is not exclusive to weddings I have to blog other sessions as well so I appeal to everyone. Its not really random who I pick. I love all my sessions I truly do! But if I've done a similar theme already recently then I will blog a different session.
On that note most sessions will go on my site. I know they are not there now. But its because I am creating a new site and it will be up in about a month complete with video! ;)

There you go...I do know from her blog that she does post plus size models as well as people from varying ethnicities, so I am not really all that worried about her, I just thought it would be interesting to see what she said.

I've actually never heard of photographers not blogging every event. Most of the major photogs in my area (that keep blogs, not all of them do) will blog at least a few images from every wedding they do. But the area where I live is FAR from a major market like LA, so it's probably different.

Now I have noticed that couples that are really attractive or couples who have really unique weddings (not necessarily expensive, but in a unique setting or destination weddings) tend to get more photos blogged than average couples who have average weddings. I've never heard of Green Wedding Shoes or Style Me Pretty but I'm assuming they're some kind of wedding websites?

I seen a lot of the same names that many of the girls there throw out. I haven't looked into them because my wedding so far away. Can you tell me who you or talking about?
  • The article definitley made me go back to my mental filing cabinet. What he/she says is so true and definitley a little sad. Our photographer is a good friend of ours. Her mission statement is pretty much as the writer said it should be; shooting/posting pictures based on emotion and the love she feels in the room, not based on the bride's waist size. That is why I love her so much and why she is so amazing at her vocation.

  • Regarding the blogging/posting of every event, my FI and I required our chosen photog and videographer to include in the contract that they could not use any pictures or video shot at our event online or in print without our written permission.  As I looked for photog options I actually was less likely to go with one that did that for that reason; it made me wonder if all these brides and grooms knew the pics of them were being posted online and used for the photographer's advertising, but in either case we didn't want to become part of the advertising.

We've had pretty good luck with vendors on the local board; we found our photog and videographer that way, got many of what turned out to be good recommendations on venues too but didn't go with any of them.  The photog we went with had some interesting pics, I guess in Vegas it's popular to do a "trash the dress" session where you basically go destroy your wedding dress by rolling around on the ground or getting covered in paint or whatever the case may be; he had some of those pics on his site so definitely some things that deviated from 'main stream.'  However, our decision was made based on the merits of his photography skill, I gave no consideration to client diversity and still wouldn't.

  • I know I'm way late to this party, but - in Vegas, we had to use (at least during the ceremony) the photographer they provided. We didn't bother to get another one, because my SIL is a hobbyist photographer.

Anyway, I'd been sort of disappointed because our photos weren't "artsy," but you know, he caught us (well, a couple were dorky) and the way we are towards each other. And J even smiled in a couple of them.
