"Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter" is Offensive?

So on FB this morning, one of my friends wrote a post about how she thinks this movie is incredibly offensive, and then some other people commented with some serious venom about how horrible and disrespectful it is.

This never occurred to me.  I fully intend to go see it soon after it comes out because it looks awesome.

Does anyone here think it's offensive?  I'm so curious.

Re: "Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter" is Offensive?

  • What is it that they are offended by? Just curious.

    image
  • Why did she say it was offensive?  Just because they made Abraham Lincoln a vampire hunter?

I love history (I'm studying it for my M.A.) and even though I usually cringe at the idea of bastardizing historical facts, when it's something with THIS ludicrous a premise, I usually look the other way.  If it was something that could be seriously considered and could sully his reputation (Abraham Lincoln beating his wife, fathering numerous children with mistresses, etc.) I could see people getting up in arms about it.  But a vampire hunter?  Come on.

  • It's not like they're playing this off to be "based on a true story" or anything.  It's just an interesting story that twists in real historical figures.  If you go into it understanding that it's complete historical fiction, I don't see the big deal.
  • Does your friend honestly think the people who wrote and directed this film actually believe that honest Abe was a vampire hunter?

I would reply back that you think Forrest Hump is offensive, because he obviously was a sweet little boy, not a hornball who shagged lots of floozies.

  • Apparently it's "disgraceful and insulting to one of our nations greatest leaders."

Because making a President a Vampire Hunter is disgraceful?  That's all that I can figure out here.

Wow. That's the kind of thing that makes me think "Stop taking yourselves so damn seriously!"

  • I just commented that I'm planning on going and seeing it the day it comes out and have been since I saw the first trailer.  And that the person who wrote the book also wrote "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies."

I can MAYBE see it if these people are the type to think the President's office is to be held in high esteem regardless of what they do (I don't know how to phrase this without sounding dickish, yay), so you can't say anything negative about a President EVER and thus portrayal as a vampire hunter is offensive.

    Bingo.
Like someone else said, it's not like it was portraying him in something that was even plausible.  C'Mon folks.  It's a vampire hunter movie.
  • It never even occurred to me that people would be offended by it.  I was genuinely surprised.

  • Im halfway through the book and I think its a fantastic nod to one of my favorite historical figures.  Yes he is written as a vampire hunter, but he is also written as an honest guy with dignity and integrity.

I cant wait to see the movie

I really want to read the book before the movie.  I loved P&P&Z, so I figured I'd like this one too.

I'm also reading it for a book club, we are meeting next week to discuss and see the movie, can't wait!  I'm loving it so far.  I really don't get people being offended by this, it's fiction FFS.  Like Blue said, it upholds his character, just changes the circumstances a bit.

I read P&P&Z too, also a good read!

  • I overheard a couple people in the office discussing it last week.  One woman didn't realize that the whole "found a diary" premise was fiction.  She thought it was real and that it was important for this part of history to be brought to light.

    People scare me sometimes.
  • I'm not offended though I could see  how if you have a stick up your ass or are a distant relative of Abe Lincoln you could be.

I'm also a huge history person, but like Bay said, the premise is so ridiculous you're kind of a tool if you're offended.

I don't really understand why it's offensive. Like PP's have said, it's not being advertised as being based on a real movie. I can't decide if it looks stupid or cool based on the trailers. I probably won't go see it only because I'm a whimp and can't handle brutal or scary movies in any form or fashion.

Gah, this is me with anything suspenseful.  I'm a TERRIBLE movie watcher.  We hardly ever go to theaters because of it.
  • Oh goodness gracious. I think the movie looks amazing and plan on seeing it as well. People never cease to amaze me. It would never have occurred to me that this would be offensive.
  • This isn't offensive to me at all. I mean, its whatever. People need to get over it. People really are tightly wound these days. I should ask my friend what she thought... She finagled her way into the NYC premiere last night.

Glad I'm not the only one.
We try not to go to the theater either. No matter what, even if I don't drink or eat for hours before, I ALWAYS have to pee right at the good parts. It drives me nuts!

Were the offended people angry because it was Abraham Lincoln, or the office of the president in general?  I mean, what it it was Grover Cleveland, Vampire Hunter?  Would they care?  Or is it just because Lincoln is one of our historically great presidents?
  • Maybe I'm just a diiick, but I might utilize this opportunity to fvck with her and start posting fake facts about past presidents.

Seriously though, how do you survive in this world if you are that easily offended

  • Oooh I didn't know it was one of the historical novel edits. I read Jane Slayer. Was pretty good but I spent most of the book trying to remember the details of the original (Jane Eyre) instead of just enjoying it and ended up kind of ruining it for myself.
I think it's cool to bastardize the classics with these horror edits. It gets people who wouldn't normally read classical literature to at least give them a try. And from the one I read, the additions are pretty true to the original dialogue's... dialect I guess? Can't think of the word I want.

    People are ridiculous.
