Burlesque

What do you think about it?  Do you think it's different than stripping?  After some people answer, I'll share an anecdote about why I'm asking.

Re: Burlesque

  • I don't know, but I almost went to a Burlesque place in DC for my 26th birthday with my husband and transexual friend :)

Actually I think it is different, because (from what I've seen in ads and stuff) it's more of a show that happens to have half naked chicks, verses just half naked chicks.
  • i think it's completely different than stripping.

Burlesque is supposed to be sultry and spark the imagination, stripping is just nakedness imo.

I'd rather H went to a strip club than a burlesque show.
  • I'd love to go to a burlesque show but have no interest in going to a strip joint.
I think burlesque is just that, a show where as stripping is just happening. I think that makes sense, kind of?
  • The burlesque show around me has a magician too! Let me pull a rabbit out of a hat, oh wait, the rabbit is a naked woman with nipple tassles!
  • I like burlesque.  I find the history around it interesting and was watching a burlesque and comedy show on netflix.  To this, H raised an eyebrow and said I couldn't like burlesque because I'm a woman.  I told him he's full of hooey.

Anna - why would you rather your H see stripping over burlesque?

  • I think the two are very different.  I wouldn't mind going to a burlesque show because, in my mind, it's more of a show that involves nudity.  I think strippers would make me burst into uncomfortable nervous laughter.

  • I think watching a burlesque show on tv would be kind of fun actually. In my mind it's like circus performers meet steamy romance meets Vegas showgirl.
  • I think it's more theatrical and hot. This is going to sound weird, but when I watch strippers, I just feel bad for them. But when you watch burleqsue dancers, you can actually admire their sexuality.

  • In art, there is a difference between nudity and nakedness.  That is the difference between burlesque and stripping.

I just feel that burlesque brings a seductiveness, playfulness and a sensuality that I alone should use to spark his interest.

H is rather anti-strippers anyway but strippers always come off (to me anyway) as "hey, look at my boobs!" and a burlesque performer is more "look at my lips, look at my body. can you imagine what i could do to you with them?"

Does that make any sense how i typed it?
  • Anna- interesting and I see what you mean.
  • That makes sense Anna. It's more of a physical wanting (Hey look, big boobs and an asss) verses an emotional (don't you want this?)
  • Anna, I totally get that.  I think I would rather Scott see burlesque because I would go with him and be way more into it than him :D
  • That makes sense, Anna.  I was thinking about it in terms of exposure and didn't see the correlation.

I think that's my reasoning too. I have no desire to go to a strip club, but a burlesque show would at least stimulate the anthropology part of me as well as the performer part.

I was a bit obsessed with Burlesque when i was younger.  Thanks to seeing "Gypsy".

i wanted to do burlesque because a stripper just shows off their body, a good burlesque performer makes a man place her on a pedestal and want her while letting him know that she's not attainable.  I think it's wonderfully seductive.

I actually agree with this.  I watched (of all things) an episode of Wife Swap where the mother did burlesque on the side and I always thought that it woul dbe something I'd want to try at some point in the future.  I also like the Betty Page style pin up pictures and  think it's so completely different from modern centerfolds.

  • Yay! Burlesque! =)

Most of you ladies hit it right on the head...burlesque is more about the art of femininity and sensuality and not just being naked. Most (true) burlesque shows don't get completely naked anyway--you always leave something to the imagination!

When it started, it was aimed at lampooning the social elite, politicians, dignitaries, etc. and often featured men in drag and comedic skits with sexual undertones. It later turned into more striptease with the vaudeville circuit. Back then it *was* stripping, and the ladies were refered to as strippers. Once the 60s and 70s came along and porn became an industry, the burlesque strippers had to take more and more off and do more things to keep the industry going, hence what we have today in strip clubs. The old art died out, but experienced a revival in the late 80s/90s.

Sorry for the long post! It's obviously a passion of mine! I've been performing since 2007--if you have the chance to take a class I highly recommend it!

  • rho, I was hoping you would pop in here with some info!
  • well I think I mind-dumped it all for you right there! =)
btw, khs, LOVE your sig! I've been singing what I think it would sound like to J and he just looks at me funny!

  • haha, awesome!  Everyone loves the singing shark.
  • Rho--I know nothing baout burlesque.  What kind of class would you recommend?  Are there basic beginner's classes, etc?  Everyone has piqued my interest!
  • Eh.  Im kinda whatever about both and dont see that much of a difference.

If you get paid to take your clothes off, it doesnt matter to me what kind of a bow you wrap it up in.  You are still getting paid to get naked.

Neither bothers me though.  FI could go to either and I wouldnt mind.  Nor do I judge strippers or burlesque dancers.

  • I think the two are very different. One takes some talent and one doesn't (stripping).

<div>Ouch. I totally disagree. I think you ladies are going to the wrong strip clubs.</div><div>
</div><div>The stripper pole + cookie cutter beauty killed most theater quality in stripping, it made it more athletic and plastic. But that doesn't mean strippers aren't talented, and it doesn't mean burlesque dancers are any better than strippers. Both kinds of dancers have a myriad of possibilities of what their purpose of dancing is and how they do it.</div>

I'll disagree too. I took a pole dancing class and it was the hardest/best workout I've ever had. It looks so easy, but it's really not. The physical strength you have to have is unreal.
