What kinds of things are Republicans and Democrats watching on TV?

I thought this was interesting. It's a listing of the top 15 TV shows watched by Republicans vs. Democrats.

http://www.tvsquad.com/2010/11/10/republicans-love-modern-family-democrats-favor-dexter-new/

You can take the article with a grain of salt because it's not exactly a case study. I don't know the methods by which the lists were calculated either, but I thought some of the findings were funny.

Republicans are fans of American Idol, while Democrats prefer to watch Khloe and Kourtney sluttin' it up in Miami.

  • I just saw this on the Nest.  I thought it was really strange that Modern Family is so popular with Republicans.

  • I watch 0 of the Republican shows and 5 of the Democratic shows but only 1 of those I really watch with any regularity. There are several shows on the Democrat side I've been MEANING to watch, but 0 on the Republican side.
  • I think it's strange my DH and I are both republicans, and we dont watch any of those shows. But we love Mad Men and Dexter. I think they need a recount, the have some jads missing.

That's because Dems "...seem to like shows about damaged people. Those are the kind of shows Republicans just stay away from", according to the article.

  • LOL...it's sad the the only show I watch from either of those lists is Dexter.  I do find it extremely odd that Republicans like Modern Family, but don't really believe in the 'modern family'.

Kind of makes sense when you consider that the Democratic platform is based upon the idea of helping people for the greater good, KWIM?

Haha, I kind of like yours better.
  • I regularly watch 3 on the Republican side, and 2 on the Democratic side...and I lean way left.  It is interesting to me that the only shows on the Republican side I watch (Modern Family, HIMYM, DWTS) are really close in numbers to the number of Democratic viewers, while the two I watch on the Dem side (30 Rock, Parks and Rec) have a much bigger difference in the number of viewers who are Democrat vs. Republican.

Not that I have any idea what that means, I just think it's interesting.
  • I watch 6 rep. shows and 2 dem. shows.  Huh, interesting.

  • I am not surprised that I do not watch any shows listed on the Democratic side.

I do watch alot of the Republican shows.
Glen Beck, Lie to Me, American Idol, Dancing with Stars, Amazing Race, Survivor.

I have no interest in *feel good* shows, if that is what the article implies.

I am also not surprised about "Modern Family".  I know ALOT of Republicans, and 99% of them have zero problem with the gay community, and in fact, a good portion of my gay friends are Republicans.

That's a very interesting dynamic I think. I have literally NEVER known a gay republican.

Then again there's a lot of strange or out of the ordinary political dynamics out there.

Same. Not that I don't believe you, Blue, but it hasn't been my experience.  And a lot of Republican politicians go out of their way to say that they don't support gay marriage.  Of course it's not a black-and-white thing, so just hearing that some Republicans like Modern Family wouldn't surprise me, but it being #3 is surprising, IMO.

I know I'm not a regular poster or anything (so hi?) - BUT, I know a lot of gay republicans, my step-brother and his SO included. Just putting that out there. :) And we live near Atlanta.

EDIT: Oh and they watch shows from both sides of that list.

    Log Cabin Republicans: http://online.logcabin.org/

I am not a Republican, but I am pretty sure that there are a few of the small government/lower taxes/strong national defense/I-don't-give-a-shit about your personal life types.

The idea that everyone who registers as a Republican is bigoted is pretty hurtful stereotype.

  • I lean to the right when it comes to fiscal matters, but I love me some Logo and pretty much everything on Bravo. Also, I have gay Republican friends. I also don't believe in legistlation based on morals, beyond harming one's person/property/stealing.

Oh ok. Yeah the blanket statements and stereotypes do nothing but perpetuate negativity. And really, politics especially needs to move away from that.
