Snarky Brides

Educate me!

As I became a Buckeye today, I realized that I have no idea what other state's nicknames are for the residents.  I grew up as a New Yorker, so there's no stretch of the imagination there.

So, what state are you from and what's the nickname?

Re: Educate me!

  • Well, now I'm a Texan. That's an easy one. I identify as Cajun, but that is not exclusive to south Louisiana where I grew up, nor does it apply to north Louisiana.

  • I'm from Florida, most people already know it as the Sunshine State.
  • Indiana is the Hoosier state and we are Hoosiers.
  • I don't know what VA is...other than the state slogan "Virginia is for lovers"
West Virginia is Wild and Wonderful though.

    Sorry, for being unclear.

What are you called as a resident?

    New York = New Yorker
    Arkansas = Arkansan

  • Arizona = Arizonan, Phoenician (if you are from Phoenix)

  • Masshole is not the technical term. We call it a term of endearment.

I can't think of any other word for it - "Massachusettsian"? "Bostonian" works, but not everyone is from there.

I used to be a Wisconsinite, and Scott used to be a Troll.
  • New Jersey.....so I guess New Jersyian.  I really have no idea.
  • Montanan. Yeah, we are creative.

  • Ours is pretty obvious... Minnesoootan (yes, the long o is required.), or just a Gopher. Even without the Golden Gophers (UofMN), MN has always been known as a the gopher state, due to some political cartoon back in the 1800s.

I grew up as a Wisconsinite

wouldn't you just be an Ohioan then?
  • Katie- I think I"ve asked you this before, but where in WI did you grow up?

THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT!  But I was corrected on my FB.

I didn't know if Buckeye was specific to a college or something...I'm not very aware of stuff like that.

  • Well, I would either be called a North Carolinian or a Tarheel, depending (my home state).

Iowan or Iowegian - I've heard both, and the second sounds really weird to me. But I believe we're also called the Hawkeye State.

  • The sad thing is I used to be able to spell it too!

Michigander or Michigainian. I forget which one is which area though. I'm a bad Michigan wife haha.

Steph, the other night I had a dream that I went to visit my grandparents in MN and started freaking out because I didn't have any g2g plans with knotties and was going through the list in my head of all the MN knotties. I'm nutty in my sleep.

I've also heard Dh say North Cackalackian for NC, but I don't think it's a term of endearment.
