    People are so dumb.

There have been something like 150 cases of Polio in the US, not counting the cases imported from other countries.
There was an outbreak in the Amish community about ten years ago because, ya know, they aren't vaccinated.
The thing people don't understand is, the disease hasn't vanished into thin air. It's still out there and if you don't get vaccinated, you could get it.

Bleach kills everything, even Autism. duh!

There are a few (and I mean maybe 2) vaccs I might delay, but not for fear of autism or any such rubbish. I'm a minimal interventionalist by nature, so for me it's about doing the least necessary. But believe you me, this kiddo will get all his shots.

My hunch-theory (not rooted in real science) is that kids like JMs kid and others who claim their child suffered setbacks and issues after vaccines, etc. are probably sensitive to whatever is in the vaccine and hence have problems that may mimic austic-like behavior. They may or may not be permanent depending on what's done about it. I think it's entirely possible that, just like allergies, some people react badly to them. That does NOT mean that they all cause autism. If that were true, we'd all be autistic, yes?

I'd also like to know what these kids were like growing up before those nefarious shots--autistic behaviors start early and we're getting better and noting the signs. I always wonder if these parents just never picked up on the problems these kids already maybe had. Just a thought...

  • The bleach autism "cure" enrages me to a whole new level. Any parent that is ok with feeding their kid bleach has a special place in hell reserved for them.

Not vaccinating your children because "everyone else will" is not a valid reason. It's just pure lazyness in my mind. I 100% agree with whoever said they shouldn't get insurance coverage if their child gets whatever disease could have been prevented by getting the vaccine (allergy reasons excluded of course). When FI and I have babies they will be vaccinated.

Any future kids of mine will definitely be getting vaccinated.  It seems stupid not to (barring allgeries, of course), especially considering SO is a paramedic.  I'm not sure if I'd do the chicken pox one, but getting them for illnesses that pose obvious risks if you aren't immune seems like a no-brainer.
  • Another in the "my kids WILL be vaccinated" camp. Although I'm not getting the HPV vaccine for myself...

My sister was allergic to most of her infant vaccines, but was all caught up by the time she was about 12. Some people will be allergic forever, but luckily, she grew out of it/they came up with a new vaccine (I don't remember which it was, and I feel like it was a combination of both).

  • Wisc I am sorry to hear about your son!  whooping cough has been making a huge comeback.  It's unfortunate because people no longer realize how dangerous childhood diseases can actually be.  The whooping caough resurgence has been caused not only by unvaccinated children, but I have just learned recently that adults need to get a booster shot for pertussis because immunity wanes after many years.  In adults pertussis is very rarely dangerous and often not noticed but can be passed on to small unvaccinated infants. ( I am NOT saying you gave it to him! I swear!)   I think that pediatricians should be informing parents to get vaccinated also and ask that close family members also get vaccinted.   I am guilty of not getting my booster recently and have it in my calendar once I am done with teaching at the end of the week.  I hope he feels better!

You can turn them into the school!! Sorry but that's a sore spot with me. My sister missed any chance of going to school one year because she was battling cancer and it was discovered a kid's parents lied about vaccines. Their lie could have killed her. The school became completely unsafe for her and she even when feeling healthy enough to be around others, she could not. So clearly I am extremely biased against non vaccination.

I'm glad you said something because I thought I might be the only one. When you don't vaccinate your child, you put all the other children and their families in danger of potentially very harmful diseases.
    image
  • I am a biochemist and pharmacist.  There is no valid reason for not vaccinating, since vaccinations cause NO HARM (except of course for allergies as already mentioned).  People are afraid of the presevatives used in the vaccines, because they have long, scary chemical names, and chemicals are scary.  In the trace amount used in the vaccines, they are completely harmless and necessary to ensure safety.  It's selfish, you aren't just endangering the child not receiving the vaccine, but all vulnerable populations (other kids, pregnant women, elderly, immune-compromised, etc.).

Personally, I think the rise in autism is more likely due to increased diagnosis and women having children later in life.  Increased maternal age HAS been linked to increased risk of autism, Down's Syndrome, and lots of other genetically-based disorders.

It just makes me so angry as a scientist to see false infomation thrown around to scare the public.  I'll get off my soapbox now...Have a goodnight everyone!

  • @ jazzerinashorty...

I agree. That makes a lot of logical sense to me.

Increased maternal age HAS been linked to increased risk of autism, Down's Syndrome, and lots of other genetically-based disorders.
That scares me because I'm not ready to have children, yet, but I know I'm getting to that age.

It just makes me so angry as a scientist to see false infomation thrown around to scare the public.

I'm not even a scientist and I'm angry, too, so I can't even imagine how angry you must be lol.

I wonder if people (mothers, specifically) would rather blame vaccines for their kids autism than blame their older age and genetics. I know I'd rather have something else to blame.

  • Vaccinate your kids. It's silly not to in almost all cases.

Who's had the flu shot? Thoughts?  I contemplate this every year though I've never done it.

I had to get the varicella vaccination (chicken pox) when I got to college because I hadn't had it (chicken pox) yet...though my parents exposed me multiple times as a child. I still get nervous when I'm in schools even though I've been vacinnated.

  • Definitely doing vaccinations, all the vaccinations.  So many people go through NYC from other countries, who may or may not be vaccinated or carrying something, that I can't imagine not vaccinating my children.  My mother bought into a lot of the autism scare.  My older brother wasn't exactly autistic, but had a similar disorder.  She swears that he declined after a vaccination, so I'm not sure if he had the rest of them or not.  I do know that she refused to give my sister vaccinations because they "cause" autism.  She tends to buy into every "cure" or treatment that comes into fashion.

@acaponi87 I try to get the flu shot every year. The first year I got the shot, I got the flu. But normally I'm fine. This year I didn't get the flu shot and I was sick almost the entire winter. The trouble was, I wasn't allowed to get the shot while I had the flu. So I'd wait for the flu to pass, but it never stopped long enough for me to get the shot. It was a hellish holiday season, I'll tell ya that.
The shot hurts for a split second, but, seriously, I'm a wuss. So it probably doesn't hurt anyone else but me. It's sooo worth it. I'm going to get it this fall first chance I get, come hell or high water I do not want to spend another winter like the last one.
I mean, it's not perfect, you can still get the flu even if you get the shot, but I'd rather try something than try nothing.

I vaguely remember the meningitis shot hurting, but again, I'm a wuss so I could be remembering wrong... It was awhile ago and it was mandatory at my school (college).
