Dreading the dentist.....

I have an appointment at 4:00 today and I'm wishing I was dead or in jail right now.  I haven't been in about 7 years.
It's time. Adoption saving and process started in November 2012.

Re: Dreading the dentist.....

  • Aww, don't worry.

I didn't go from the time I was 12 to 23 and it was fine.  You'll be ok.
  • I feel about the same when I go to the dentist (it's been 4 years for me so far and counting...)  You'll be ok, just get it done and over with and then you can wait another 7 years.  :)
  • 7 years!?!  I'd be scared too!

I go twice a year like clockwork but I've always loved the dentist.  I'm weird, though.

    I am going tomorrow morning!

  • I hadn't gone for about 6 or 7 years as well and my appointment went fine.  You'll feel so much better after you go.

  • This is the first time I've had dental insurance since I had my braces on.  The ortho put a bar across the back of my bottom teeth and now it is all yellowed.  I brush and floss, but can't with my bottom teeth.  Hopefully they can take it off.

I think they are just going to yell at me.  Dentists are so judgmental.

  • Barb, I had to call my doctor last year for something for my nerves when I went in for a consultation. He called in basically a superstrong antihistamine.

I have honest-to-God dental phobia.  They use laughing gas (I pay extra for it) to clean my teeth/touch them. I also use a sedation dentist here.

  • Tell them you're freaked out, and they tend to drop the judgmental attitude. On the other hand, If you have dental insurance and get the attitude, go find another dentist. There are so many good ones out there. Best of luck today!

  • I don't mind going to the dentist but I'm dreading the bills; I'm supposed to be getting veneers upper and lower in the next few weeks.

  • I dread going too.  But whenever I'm done, I feel so relieved!  You'll feel better once you've been.  Maybe treat yourself to ice cream afterwards?  Or a few strong drinks ;)

So far in the last, um, 6 months maybe, I've ignored and deleted 3 calls/messages from my dentist.  Don't wanna.

Ugh, tell me about it. My dentist lectured me on drinking Coke. I had to sit there for 10 minutes while he outlined everything bad Coke did to my teeth. He ended it with, "So, no more Coke for you." being me, I had to ask, "Okay, so what about Mr. Pibb?"
  • You have to get it over with.  What if you had decay?  Like you could fix it.  You are in good hands :)

  • LOL Seshat!

I really like going to the dentist.  I'm obsessive about my teeth (see "braces at 25" and "orthognathic mandibular advancement surgery") and (cue pity party, table of 1) my parents never took me to the dentist.

I hate that dentists do that.

I mean I love going to the dentist but that would bug the crap out of me if I got that lecture.  Like hello, everyone KNOWS Coke is bad for their teeth.  But it doesn't mean people won't drink coke.  People know cheeseburgers aren't good for their arteries but it's not like we're going to stop eating damn cheeseburgers.

And for shiit's sake it's not like you drink Coke and let it sit there in your mouth while you feel your teeth dissolving away.

Did you know that sports drinks like Powerade and Gatorade are just as bad for your teeth as Coke?  True story.

  • My dentist is actually on his 2nd set of braces.  For some reason I found that funny.  I don't know if his teeth are just really out of line, or if he thought that since he is a dentist, that his teeth should be perfect.  You know, kind of like you would judge an overweight doctor telling you to lose 10 pounds?

DH and I had our appointments together, and like I said, I hadn't gone in about 6 years and it had been about 3 for him.  My dentist comes in and says, "Wow, your teeth are great.  They look so much better than your husband's!"  Yeah, I started laughing but I felt horrible at the same time because DH needed some major cleaning done.

This.  All the assistants at my orthodontist are like this.  Almost all of them got braces put on for a second time when they started working there.  Occupational hazard.  :)

What are you talking about? I totally do this, it's the only way to truly experience the Coke flavor.

Seriously though, he told me that I need to stick to water only. But water is boring, so he suggested the Crystal Light packets, which make water taste like ass in my opinion. No soda, no sugary drinks, no Gatorade. Apparently I'm supposed to suffer with boring beverages from now on.

Yeah, that lasted all of a week. I am better about water, but I just can't give up my Coke.
  • May I suggest drinking it through a straw?  That way it won't touch your teeth :)

LOL but I totally get it.  You need your Coke.  I don't drink soda but there are plenty of things I'm not willing to give up.

  • I hated the dentist when I was young.  But now, it doesn't bother me.  I've had a lot done to my teeth in the past 9 years (root-canals, fake teeth, whitening, braces, fillings, new fake teeth...) and I've just gotten over it.  I'm actually considering braces again, because I couldn't keep up with retainers since I got new teeth after braces and now they're slightly out of alignment.

    Just breathe, you'll be fine.
  • i bursh and floss and rinse twice or three times every day!  so i dont fear the dentist at all!

my fiancee hasnt been to the dentist in YEARS though and he needs to go so bad.  i think he must have at least 10-20 cavitities!  i hope he goes and gets his teeth fixed before our wedding

I actually do drink through a straw most of the time. I'm not sure it actually helps, but I've deluded myself into thinking it does.

OOOOH I'll play - he's pasty, he's POOR (her ring was kinda small, should she ask for a new one?), and apparently now... he has bad teeth?

I kinda feel bad for this fella.  Sounds like he's getting duped into marrying a rather high-maintenance slore bag.

  • I am so terrified of the dentist. I actually have to get my mom or my husband to call to make the appointment, because when they say "Thank you for calling X dental" I start hyperventilating and hang up.

They know I have severe anxiety and are super nice and slow. Last time the assistant held my hand the entire time and they never once made me feel stupid. My rule is, you lecture me or make me feel dumb, I take my business elsewear.

Don't be so judgemental of his teeth; if you loved him you'd get him a gold grill that says bonnbonn across the front.
