Snarky Brides

Just out of curiosity...

I am...well, long story short, I guess I'm Agnostic. My fianc was raised Catholic, but he hasn't been to a church in years and considers himself agnostic as well. This is purely out of curiosity, we are on the same page for our ceremony, raising any future children, etc.
What will change for him, church wise, once we are married? I read on another thread about this sort of thing and I was just wondering what marrying outside the Catholic Church means for someone who is technically catholic. Thanks!

Re: Just out of curiosity...

  • The people on the Catholic board under Cultural Wedding Boards could give you all the details, but basically a Catholic who marries outside of the Catholic church can no longer receive the sacraments.
  • That's what someone else was saying on the other thread, I just wasn't sure what that was. And FI doesn't know either...he isn't very interested in his given religion. I guess I should probably venture over to the Catholic board, I just didn't want our ambivalence to be mistake for disrespect. Thanks!
  • They are usually very understanding over there.
  • I believe the sacrements would be the bread (wafer things) and wine.  I could be totally wrong though.

<div>For a baptized Catholic to marry outside the Catholic Church essentially means they will no longer be in communion with the church. They will no longer be entitled to receive the eucharist during mass nor any other Sacraments such as Last Rites, etc.</div>

I guess I don't understand why it matters if he isn't very interested in Catholicism anyway.  Sounds like....nothing will change.

  • It doesn't matter. It was just a matter of passing interest.
  • My 1st wedding I married a non catholic. They kicked me out of the church i went to all my life. Baptized there,CCD,church,etc....in no uncertain terms I was excommunicated!
