I do that all the time, in fact the dress I wanted for the wedding was like that.  I didn't like it, mom said try it on, I loved it.  I didn't end up getting it as it wasn't right for the wedding, and my mom offered to make one, which is more meaningful, but if i bought one that would have been it.

I have bought some dresses and cute shaped tops with ugly patterns or colors.  Sometimes, even though I think something is ugly, there is something about it that makes me need to have it.

I usually find clothes where i don't like them on the rack but i force myself to try it on.  It usually surprises me!

I tried on a pea green dress last year with a cutout in the front. It wasn't a color I'd ever say "ooh, I've got to go find a pea green dress today," but it was interesting-looking - and on sale.

I was surprised at how flattering the fit was, so I bought it.

I did the same thing with hot pink tights. I bought them on a whim, and have a great sweater to wear them with along with a black dress or skirt. They weren't ugly, but hot pink???
