I think they've capitalized on a WAY current and popular trend to make people aware of what they need in an emergency preparedness kit, which everyone should have on hand anyway.

Actually, it seems kind of like clever marketing.

I think it's funny. It sounds like someone basically wrote the standard emergency preparedness procedures (first aid kit! canned food! flashlight with batteries! talk about an escape plan with your family!) and just wrote some zombie stuff with it.

I think it's a little ridiculous that they had to write "emergency preparedness" around a zombie apocolypse to get people to pay attention.

It would depend upon what you can offer.  We can't be feeding and sheltering people unless they legitimately bring something to the group that hasn't already been covered.
