[QUOTE] CA won't let unmarried couples share car insurance, so we're changing over in December when our current policies expire. I know having multiple cars and drivers on the same policy saves money over separate policies for each one, for sure.

NJ won't let unmarrieds share an auto policy unless one person owns both cars and just insures the other person as a household driver. So if we wanted joint insurance before the wedding, one of us would have had to have signed their car over to the other. Neither DH nor I felt comfortable with the idea of one of us "owning" the other one's car, so we just held off until after the wedding.

  • Ours is like $180 for the year?  It's super reasonable. We have a lot of coverage; I'm too lazy to actually pull up the policy though.

We also had to have it here.  If you don't have it yet, GET IT.  The one apartment complex I lived in during college had an attic pipe burst over Thanksgiving weekend. By the time everyone came back to clean out their apartments, everything was ruined.  I remember it being like 45 apartments ruined. The complex couldn't afford to cover everything (and legally didn't have to), so those without renters insurance were completely fvcked.

[QUOTE]I got mine through Horace Mann which is a teacher specific insurance program. It was about $180 per year and covered up to $20,000 in belongings. Definitely worth it in case something happens. Stacey, that seems kind of high to me. We're paying $750 a year for homeowners through USAA and it covers a hell of a lot more. We also have our auto and life through them though so I don't know if that keeps dropping it. Who does everyone have life insurance through? The cheapest quote I can get for Scott (36, smoker) is through Metlife for $120/month for a 30 year term and that seems a bit steep. Whole goes into several hundred per month which we can't afford.

USAA has pretty good rates on life insurance! I see your H is military, so you should be able to join! They just had some kind of deal, where you get term for $5 a month, and no medical clearance or questionnaires. I'm a smoker as well and have a hell of a time getting affordable insurance outside of my work policy.

I would check on that b/c I've had joint car insurance with my FI for about 6 years now. Regardless of the company your with, I would think NJ insurance laws apply to all state residents.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that both of our cars in ONLY in our names, individually.
  • Mine is through State Farm and it actually made my premium go down because of the multi line discount.  But I think it's about $100 a year.
