Snarky Brides

Interesting Facts

I used to play a game with my friends when were bored called "Interesting Facts". everyone tells a fact that they know that they think others wont know. It can be really fun.

I will start.

There was a beer bottle company in Australia that used amber colored dimpled bottles that had to be banned because a rare beetle kept trying to mate with the littered bottles instead of the females of the species!

Also I have officially changed my screen name three times but I finally have a name that allows me to change my sig and avatar! I was Aedes* last time (the time before that I used an email address. Doh!)

  • Poor beetles! Interesting fact: every city in Georgia is no further than a day's carriage ride away from the next closest city. The whole state was pretty much planned that way.

Learned that one in Georgia history in seventh grade Laughing
  • I am totally using that next time I play this game with friends!

  • You can drown a fish by keeping it underwater. While they don't breathe air, fish need to come up to the surface of the water to clean out their gills and release toxins. If a fish is prevented from reaching the surface they will die.

A betta fish can survive up to 12 hours out of water due to a specialized breathing apparatus called a labarynth. This allows them to get oxygen out of air in times of draught.
  • Oh god katie I wonder how the first person to know that figured it out!

  • I don't know, but I know all sorts of weird fish facts like...

Neon tetras are cousins to the pirahna

An adult Pacu (sold at pet stores) can reach 24" in length and weigh up to 60 pounds.

Goldfish can live to be 30 years old if given the proper environment. I believe the oldest on record was 41 years old.

There is a mountain lake in Japan where the koi fish have been documented through many families. The oldest is around 250 years old.
  • The only one I can think of right now:

Every time a fly lands somewhere, it secretes digestive fluid so it can suck up the predigested food. So basically, every time a fly lands, it regurgitates.

  • The sound you hear when you "crack" your knuckles is called the cynovial fluid in your joints.

The movie "In and Out" was inspired by Tom Hanks' Oscar speech from when he won for "Philadelphia." In the speech, he thanks his high school drama teacher and calls him "one of the finest gay Americans."
  • It took Lewis and Clark 18 days to portage around the falls in central Montana.

Breeding merle-merle crosses vastly increases the likelihood of blindness and deafness.

  • Sorry kd. I was racking my brain and couldn't come up with anything. Here's another one that not many people know, or even care about:

According to USAT rules, it is entirely legal for triathletes to use snorkels during the swim portion of the race. It is not efficient, but it is legal. Of all the triathlons I have competed in, volunteered for, and watched, I have only seen one person with a snorkel. However, I've seen at least 150 people quit early because they couldn't breathe while swimming (no face in the water, water up the nose, etc). Maybe they should have had a snorkel..

  • Another interseting fact: I am watching Last Chance Highway. I think I'm in love with the red head, with the thick southern accent, that rescues dogs.

  • I could be wrong, but I believe paper money is actually made out of linen (at least partially) to make it more durable and harder to reproduce.

    Bonobo chimpanzees are bisexual.
  • The Blue Whale has a heart the size of a VW Bug, and it pumps 10.7 tons of blood through vessels so large a human could crawl through the aorta! (6th grade project).

Frogs drink through their skin, and they blink they're sort of retracting they're eyes, and the muscles help push their food down (I had pet tree frogs),
  • The northernmost point of the Roman empire was documented in 179AD in Trencin, Slovakia.
