Snarky Brides

Lets talk about Shutter Island again (with *SPOILERS*)

(Seriously, spoilers.  I'm going to give away the whole movie in three seconds.)

I've been dying to actually discuss it

Did anyone else think that had they just left out or toned down the part about Rachel "creating a whole imaginary world around her because she can't accept the reality of what has happened and what she has done blah blah" it wouldn't have been so obvious?   I kind of went into it thinking he was going to end up being a mental patient all along because I had heard there was some big "twist" and that's just the natural conclusion, I think.  But lord, they didn't have to SPELL IT OUT on two separate occasions.  I went  "that's what he's doing" as soon as they said that.

What did everyone else think about the specifics of the movie?  Did you get it?  Figure parts out?  Go wtf the whole time?

Re: Lets talk about Shutter Island again (with *SPOILERS*)

  • I'm going to read this thread even though I shouldn't.  We are suppose to get this movie this week from netflix!  Cannot wait!

  • I have it, but haven't watched it. It looks scary as heck. There's no way I can watch it with Chloe at home, so maybe if she spends the night with a grandparent this week I'll check it out. But then I'll be home alone, as Manda is at the beach for a week. Why must I be such a damn wuss?
  • Look at all you cheaters!

  • These are my thoughts on it:

    1. Despite the trailers, it is not very scary. The trailers lead the viewer to believe it's a horror/scary movie. It's not at all. So if anyone is not watching it for that reason, go ahead and rent it.

    2. We are left not knowing whether Teddy (that was his name, right?) was a patient or not. He was a patient, hence his statement to Mark Ruffalo's character about knowing you're a monster. He KNEW he really killed his wife, and rather than live with knowing that, he chose to continue to think he was a law enforcement agent so he'd get lobotomized and not have to live with that knowledge anymore.

I enjoyed the fact that even though it WAS predictable in the fact that what you thought thirty minutes into the film was going to end up happening did happen, there was still a good solid run in the middle-to-end (like when he was in the cave) where you went "wait, is this predictable? Is this really happening or do they just WANT him him to think that?  Is he nuts or is it drugs?"  I thought that was some pretty good storytelling to where you seriously had no clue WTF was going on even though it seemed so obvious at the same time.

  • This thread makes me wish that I remembered the movie more. I do remember thinking it wasn't as creepy scary as I would have liked. Some of my favorite parts were where he was in the building that housed the most severe patients and I wish that the movie had developed that aspect of the plot a bit more.  I would really like to watch it again, knowing what I know.

[QUOTE]I always HAVE to read spoiler because I can't watch movies like this without knowing what happens.  So I have absolutely nothing to contribute to the thread outside of I am friends with a guy who was an extra (extra, extra) in the film.

When you start a new book, do you read the first couple chapters and then read the end before you read the entire book?  I do that too.

  • I thought it was predictable, but I still liked it a lot.
I didn't see the twist with his wife, even though I figured he'd be a mental patient.
The scene where he is pulling his kids bodies out of the water was amazing.
It wasn't scary, but I love the noir feel to it, and I'm definitely going to buy it. I usually don't like anything, but I was really impressed with this one.

  • I thought it was fairly predictable.  But let's talk about the ending.  Do you think he really is crazy, or do you think he was faking not seeming to remember everything that happened?

  • I didn't see the "him being part of the family with the drowned children" coming.  I thought that situation and his situation were totally seperate from each other.  My guess was that he WAS a mental patient there, but that he had gotten drunk and accidentally started the fire that killed his wife, and thats why he went nuts.   And the whole rachel thing was just a gateway to accept his own reality.   So it actually being his situation took me by surprise, which was nice.

    Also, I love Michelle Williams.

I probably would have been right there with you, if I wasn't engaged to a movie ending guesser/spoiler.  He drives me nuts sometimes.  I can't count the number of movies he's ruined for me.

  • I knew he was a mental patient from the previews. The images of his wife disappearing in his arms, the whole number 67 thing, it was obvious that he was insane and didn't know it. But I didn't see the part about his wife kiling his kids until  he met the fake Rachel, because I figured that storyline had to come from somewhere and he was always seeing the little girl.

My theory on the end is that he is sane, that he didn't revert back to Teddy like the other times. By having the lobotomy, he would become a "ghost" as they said, essentially die because he would no longer have his memories. So, he could die a good man, wheras if he was released he'd have to live with the knowledge that he killed his wife--making him a monster.

And the doc realized this too, hence his "Teddy?" in a questioning voice.
  • east, I didn't see the movie but I read the book. I called the ending halfway through. and I'm not very good at that.

This is what I thought too.

  • Oh, and about your point on Rachel. I thought it was well done. When the fake Rachel "reappeared" it just reinforced my belief that Teddy was crazy. but when he met her in the cave, I was confused. It wasn't until after he left her cave that I started thinking about where the death of the kids came into play and figured it must have been his own experiences.

But, I wasn't expecting Rachel to be made up altogether.

Was it a good book? It seems like the kind of book I would like.
  • Michelle Williams is gorgeous.
I also loved the setting, except for the boat ride. The green screen behind them was really obvious in the begininning and it drove me nuts.

    Me too.

I guessed at some point in the movie that his partner was the missing doctor.  I was really proud of myself for that one.

I was sorely disappointed in it. Was hoping that it would be much scarier/less predictable.

I had heard that it was kind of predictable, but when I figured it out mid-movie, I didn't want to be right. There was only one little plot twist that got me.

    I love your wedding dress.

the book was good enough, once it got going. but I kept putting it down at the beginning because it was slow at the beginning.
  • btw, I'm serious about your dress. I really like it, I've been meaning to tell you that. :)

I was wondering "Wtf is going on" the entire time. I'm not great at figuring things out like that, even if they are pretty obvious. I was just watching it and not trying to figure it out. I felt the same way I did after watching Donnie Darko and Memento. Totally lost and stupid.
    image
  • I thought it was a pretty good movie. The only thing that bothered me was his thinking he was a monster for killing his wife. I would have killed her too.
