AATB

I saw you talking about breaking Fi's heart by saying no pup right away, so not that you asked for it, but here's my opinion on getting a dog right away (and you can tell your Fi that your dog crazy friend said this so you aren't the meanie)

I would really recommend waiting for several months after you guys get moved in and settled before getting a dog. The animal is already going to be very stressed when you bring it home and any changes of routine can only make it worse. You guys need to establish a routine before you should get a pup to make it easier on yourself. If you guys have any fights, even stupid play fights, it could really set the dog off thinking there is conflict and it might react poorly. It also can really confuse them if you are rearranging furniture and things like that which is just another reason to wait for a bit.

Holidays can also be really rough on pets, especially if you are planning on travelling or having people over. More established pets often have fun with house guests but a newbie will just be scared shitless the majority of the time and think the house is under attack.

Also, like another poster said, potty training in the snow sucks asss. Really having a dog in the winter kind of sucks. Nothing more fun than going out every 30 minutes in freezing temps and coaxing a dog to pee, only to have them refuse to do so and pee inside the house where it's comfy. Not something you want to encourage!

  • As a new pup parent, I definitely have to agree with Katie. H and I lived together a long time before getting a dog and now, I'm really glad we did. Dogs need a lot of space and attention and it's hard to give one either during the move-in process.

  • Just now saw this!

Thanks so much for your input.  I TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU.  You want his email so you can explain all of this to HIM!?

I did get him to agree to wait until after the holidays to get a pet, but waiting even longer than that would be ideal.  Like waiting til next spring or summer would be better.  Someone in the previous thread mentioning how fun it is to house train a puppy during the winter - never even crossed my mind, and yeah, we get lots of snow and it's freezing in January.  I gave him my word that we could get one after the holidays, but I'm hoping he can see that it would be better to wait.  He's already pretty upset with me that we're not getting one now.

I would love to have a dog, honestly, and I'm really excited for getting one - but they are so much work and so much responsibility.  We aren't honeymooning til March.  I'd seriously like to wait til after that.

I will bring all of this info to him though - THANK YOU so much :)  I'm keeping my fingers crossed that he will come over to my side.

  • Oh any time :) I hate dealing with Katie in the snow. Last year we had our massive snowstorm (which was still nothing compared to your area) and it sucked hardcore. Nothing like waking up at 6am to dig a path through the snow so the dog could pee.
