Enhanced body patdown or full body scan=nekkid picure

Which do you chose? YOU HAVE TO CHOSE ONE, don't say none or something like that.

Me= Patdown

My jury is still out on whether I'm cool with the scan.

I am patted down and wanded anyway thanks to usually travelling with a wheelchair.  It's not bad and I've only ever had 1 rude/uncomfortable pat down.

    So Pat Down
  • I think we should be allowed to chose who pats us down. Like they line 5 people up and then we get to chose the hottest one :P I mean if I am going to be vilolated I at least want the person to be good looking.
    image
  • Pat down, although it irritates me. I don't want people looking at me nekkid.

  • Ha Rhod, good idea. I think this whole thing is a violation of our rights but whatever, I still want to travel.

I like the way you think!
    :D

I think I'd have to say pat down as well, because of the radiation factor. I don't mind the image part.
I mean, think about when you go to the dentist and get x-rays- they put that huge heavy apron thing on you.. so why would I let them basically x-ray my body with no protection?
  • i would do the body scan. if you have seen one nekkid body you have seen em all. i dont like to be touched either.  i think the whole thing is silly. obviously they do the best they can to keep us safe but at some point they just need to say "people try to blow up planes. fly at your own risk"  people will always try to find ways around security and at this rate we will all be doing nekkid strip searches before flying.

Since I don't travel very much I'm going to say scan.  I have a problem with strangers touching me.  It's not a completely naked picture it's a scanned image almost like an X-ray therefore we all look the same.  It just shows if you're hiding a weapon of some kind.

  • Pat down.  I'm 99.9999% sure I wouldn'ty be able to go through one of those scanners because of a medical device I have.

Another vote for pat-down.  I've been patted down before and it wasn't that bad. I actually kind of felt like if I had anything on me, they wouldn't have found it, so I support the new standards.

Honestly, I have nothing against the screeners.  I'm sure they wouldn't enjoy looking at/touching most travellers any more than the travellers do.

  • All those saying the pat downs aren't so bad, you do realize that they've changed pat down procedures as well, right?  I don't know if that would change your opinion or not.

I read about the new pat down procedures a few days ago. I think I'm just paranoid or something. I don't trust that the images aren't stored and the radiation thing bugs me. I also imagine the person in the room reviewing the scanned images is sitting there laughing at me.

  • I would choose the pat-down and I'd like it.

In all seriousness, yes definitely the pat-down or at least I think so. The pat-downs, from what I've seen in the news are very intrusive. It's foreplay and basically, the next step would be to just start banging that person and get it over with.

I don't know why the scan bothers me so much. I believe recently I saw a story where a bunch of the scanned pictures were leaked. That doesn't make me too happy. Not to mention the possible radiation. Everytime I've gotten an x-ray, even on my ankle, they've made me wear the lead vest. The fact that this giant machine is taking a full body x-ray makes me a little leary.
  • Guys, if you don't let them pat you down, THE TERRORISTS WIN.

This.  For someone like me who hardly ever flies, it's probably not a big deal, but I'd be scared if I had to travel a lot. I don't think they know what the long term effects are (I have no data to back this up)
    imageimage
  • My biggest problem with the patdown/scanners (and I've said this before) is that I just don't think that there's much accountability.  We have something similar to the body scanner machines at select airports, and they're always offered as an alternative to a physical patdown.  However, we have to have pretty good reason to pat someone down in the first place - we don't just pull people out of the line at random and do it.  On top of that, patdowns require a fair amount of paperwork on the officer's part, so people aren't "eager" to do them in the first place.

I think it crosses a line if one expects everyone to go through these scanners.  If you have reason to believe someone may be hiding something, fine - offer a patdown or the scanner; but the travelling public at large shouldn't be subjected to it.  (and at that point, if you suspect someone may have something hidden on their person, then an "intrusive" patdown would be warranted.)  I also wonder about what is done to record the inspection.  If one is performing a patdown, something should be documented somewhere.  It doesn't appear as though that's happening, and that TSA agents tend to pat travellers down without much thought or responsibility on their part.

This is interesting to me, Tide.  Like I mentioned before I have a medical device that I cannot go through a metal detector with, and I'm fairly certain I couldn't go through one of these new scanners with.  I've had to go with pat downs ever since I got it, and I never noticed any of the TSA officers that patted me down taking time to fill out paperwork of any sort.  Should they have been doing this every time I went through?

I don't work for TSA, so I can't answer for them.  However, for us, every action that we take is documented, mostly as a CYA move.  If you were to complain about a patdown that took place after you left TSA, would they have any documentation to say what did/did not happen?

ETA: it wouldn't have to be paperwork filled out in front of you, but it should be recorded, either on paper or electronically, somewhere, IMO.

  • They will need to change gloves if they pat me down. All that touching can spread disease.

Also, I think this is less about our safety and more about $$$ for the companies manufacturing these machines.

[QUOTE]K, I agree about people touching me (I almost physically can't take it, especially if it's someone I haven't made mental peace with touching me--sounds weird, I know), but the radiation scares me.  Who knows what random horns or tails we'll sprout in a few years from that stuff?

This isn't weird. I would also choose the scan because I can't take people I don't know touching me. I get all clammy and sick feeling. My sister is the same way.

    Yes, this.

Plus I'd yell something like, "you just touched my vagina!"
  • I have gone through one of the scanners just this month.  It doesn't bother me that much, but obviously I'd prefer not to have to do it.  I'd rather someone see the digital picture of my body than pat me down, but now I'm rethinking the radiation concerns.

I really don't think any of this makes us safer.
