Snarky Brides

Not too important rant/WDYT?

I have a friend who worked with me at Express for years. After we quit, we still kept in touch, especially when she decided to become an English teacher and got a job at a district in the town next to my job. We were friendly acquaintances, but I helped her out with some teaching stuff, etc., so more than just once a year friends.

Flashforward to today. She's been very congratulatory over my engagement and dropped a few hints that she's trying to break into a makeup business and would love to do my wedding makeup. I offered to recommend her to my friends, etc and she was very appreciative. She sent me a list of her prices, etc, so I could tell people.

Well, we're taking our e-pics in a few weeks, so I emailed her to see if she could do my makeup, since she teaches in the town next to me and our pics are in the same area. I asked for prices, because I lost the original list. She told me the normal price that she would charge anyone, which is somewhat high, and does not include the consultation, which she requires.

Is it weird of me that I'm a little pissed that she didn't offer me some kind of discount? This is not how she makes her living (she's still a teacher) and I have recommended her to a few people, so I feel like I've brought in some business for her.

It's not a big deal and I can't use her because the time frame doesn't work, but I was just curious what other people think.

I'm not sure why that last line is bold. :) Apparently, TK thought it was important.
  • Hmm. I don't know if I'd be pissed.. but I'd probably wonder why she didn't offer a discount.
I do makeup for weddings, etc. on the side, and I ALWAYS give a discount to friends. I normally charge 40 a face, but a friend just got married and I did 3 faces- I told her 60 bucks for all (she ended up paying me 100, which was sweet of her)

So yea, maybe she is just greedy. haha
  • Heya, Nates :)

The girl who did our invitations is a friend of ours, too (she's married to one of our groomsmen) and she told me to tell any of my other friends getting married about her invitations and other services - she didn't offer me a discount, either. I thought she might, since we know her and all - and her invites were pretty spendy. But I kinda just chalked it up to hey, maybe she's not in a position yet where she feels established enough to offer discounts. But that's just me - I usually try to think the best of people. Maybe she's a greedy slore bag.

  • I had no idea moot/mute until you pointed it out. Thanks, I otherwise wouldn't have know what she meant.

Pay her regular fee and don't tip her?
I'd be a little ticked, especially since it is engagement pics, and basically a trial for your wedding.

  • Have you seen your friend's work? If she's just breaking into the makeup business, and doesn't have a lot of experience, would you trust her with your wedding day makeup?

[QUOTE]Just because she's an acquaintance doesn't mean she should give you a discount. While I understand why you might feel slighted it really isn't a big deal. You have no way of knowing her financial situation so the fact that she doesn't do make-up for a living is really mute.

People really don't know the difference between mute and moot? I'm not trying to be mean, I'm just really surprised. The word is even in "Jessie's Girl."

Haha! I <3 "Jessie's Girl"! And you, natch.
  • Ive seen mute/moot and then/than multiple times recently. its driving me nucking futs.
  • Then/than annoys me, too. I think, for me, it's annoying because I pronounce them differently, so they are completely different to me. FI pronounces them so that they sound really similar, so I think it's hard for him to distinguish which is appropriate. But it annoys me.

Urks instead of irks gets me angry, too.

Haha! I've never seen urk. Thats odd. Is it even a word, or did someone just misspell irk?
  • Nates! you are at 1111 posts~ this happened to me yesterday, then I looked up and it was 11:11 am. *cue twilight zone music*
  • Woo! I almost didn't want to respond because that was cool.

They just misspell irk. Someone usually calls them out on it.
