When I first came to the knot I posted a thread about my mom's money drama and that she might not be able to come to the wedding.

Well FI and I finally decided to just charge the plane ticket and her hotel. About a month ago my mom and her friend went to Foxwoods casino and won big!!! She gave us cash to pay us back for the ticket, the hotel, and the original money I gave her to file for the bankruptcy. And she will have enough left over to pay for her food and have walking around money. Everything worked out. I appreciate the unfiltered advice! My mom and I have been talking. I hope she will start to fix her issues, she's in counselling again.

I didn't even know they had gone until after they got back.  Granted, not necessarily a great idea to go to a casino when you are broke, but I'm over trying to lecture her about the right financial moves. She said she was feeling lucky lol

I'm glad to hear it. The last thing you and your FI needed was to take on debt in her name, as you are starting out.

I hope she gets financial counseling.

Maybe I'm overly cynical and pessimistic, but I don't see why it's cause for celebration that someone with severe money troubles happened to get lucky at a casino. She got lucky this time. What about next time?

It's good that you got your money back and all, but sometimes the end doesn't justify the means, you know?

I think it's good for MVJ because she is an innocent party. She wants her mom at her wedding, a pretty simple request. Now that is possible.
Hopefully Mom will straighten up, but even if she doesn't MVJ has her money back and her mom will be there.

Agreed. I'm not happy how she got the money, but I'm happy she was able to pay us back and we're not going into debt. I'm also happy that she'll be able to come to the wedding and walk me down the aisle.  Believe me, I've been around and around with my mom about all the money stuff (see previous thread)  and like I said a few responses ago I don't think it was great how she got the money.  But she is seeing a counselor again and I hope she is able to get on the right path.

I read the previous thread that you linked, and it actually made me mad for you. Especially the thing about her taking out credit cards in your name. I hate when people get taken advantage of, especially by family members.

Congratulations to your mom, I guess, but I have to agree with jengin. If she was so hard up that you were paying for her to attend your wedding, she shouldnt have been using what little money she had to gamble. Thats somewhat disrespectful to you.

I think Jas hit it on the head.  It sucks that MVJ's mom is obviously so irresponsible (sorry, MVJ) that she would be gambling after crying and basically extorting money from her daughter to attend the wedding.  However, at least the gambling paid off MVJ and set her straight. 

Now, the mom should be on her own financially and, hopefully, once she hits rock bottom she'll realize she needs help.  The big payout is not going to help her see that she needs to be repsonsible with money, but hopefullly she'll seek help soon, as long as MVJ sticks to her word and doesn't keep sending her money.
