[QUOTE]Something in that story seems a little off. When she said she switched doctors several times during her pregnancy, that set off red lights for me. Who switches doctors that many times, unless she didn't want to hear what they were telling her and kept doc shopping until she found someone that finally agreed with her? Especially during pregnancy, people want to have a long term, trusting relationship with their doctor. And, having gone through a pretty traumatic childbirth, ithe whole thing doesn't make sense.

I agree. I have a feeling she was told by many doctors that she would need another C-section and just bounced around till she found one (or a midwife) who validated her.

• I still stand by my original statement. She needs to get over the idealized crunchy-granola idea of a natural birth and be happy that she and her baby are alive an healthy. She may or may not have a lawsuit - I don't know about consent issues, but if it was a matter of life or death to the baby (and it does - fetal heart rate was down and baby needed O2) then I think the hospital made the right decision. And this:

I was not present at his birth. That moment in my life has been taken from me. I had a birth plan. It included my desire to bathe my son myself for his first bath. A nurse bathed him while I was knocked out. My birth plan included my desire to hold my son immediately upon birth.

I understand being upset, but that moment wasn't "stolen" from her. Had she previously had an epidural or spinal, she probably wouldn't have had to be completely anesthetized because they could have done the spinal block and the C-section. Her insistence on the no-meds/water birth meant that when there was an emergency, she needed to be knocked out because they would not have had time to place the epidural. My BFF had to have an emergency C-section because she almost bled out when she gave birth. If she hadn't, she would have died. That was most certainly not in the "birth plan" but she came out with a healthy baby and lived to tell the tale.

What it comes down to, for me, is that the OP had two choices: natural birth, dead baby or C-section, healthy baby.

• I had a birth plan too. I wanted Kieran to be put right on my chest and to stay there for a while. However, when he sto9pped breathing, they took him away from me so he could be resuscitated. So, yeah, I am glad the doctors chose not to "stick to my birth plan", because he is alive.

Or maybe my childbirth was not valid. Damn it.

• My birthplan w/ Taryn was "don't hand me a gooey baby." Yep. I told the nurse to make sure to clean her up before she gave her to me.

[QUOTE]I'm skeptical too. Even if everything went exactly as she says, are we to believe that no one ever came and spoke to her when she woke up? Did she ask to see anyone? Did she contact anyone in patient services or hospital admin before she was discharged? It would be a cold day in hell that I would leave without answers.

Yep. Doctors and nurses are coming in the room all the time after the birth to check up on you for the duration of the stay. I don't believe they were asked questions and wouldn't answer.

• Hmmm...yeah lots of unanswered questions here. A hospital would have to be stupid as all get-out to not get consents for surgery in some way, shape or form. I'm kinda side-eying this for now...

The scalp monitors aren't that scary--they only go just under the skin and they don't use them for all babies all of the time.

My L&D nurse friend told me this little 'rule of thumb' they had on the unit re: birth plans: The bigger/longer the plan, the faster the c-section. =P I get having an idea of how you want things to go and if all goes well, you should get your wish. But lets be realistic here, folks--birth is dangerous. Natural, yet dangerous. That's why so many women used to die from it. These measures are in place for a reason, and I promise it's not because the medical staff is out to get you and ruin your perfect delivery. These very same people would be quick to sue should something go wrong and nobody acted properly to remedy it. Everyone has to work together.
*Sets aside soapbox*

• I wanted to punch the write of this article when I read it last week. This was obviously a crash C-Section, nobody goes nto the OR without scrubs, so there goes her point about her hubby scrubbing in, and they DO NOT screw internal monitors into the baby's head. This is such garbage.
• Fucked up situation! You can't blame her for wanting a vbac or switching docs. Some just won't do a vbac I feel that a lot of ob/gyn are cut happy. She will probably get paid if she decides to sue!
