I get that. FI got my ring at Tiffany's so whenever I go in to have it cleaned, I always make sure I'm dressed nice (ie no ripped jeans and flip flops.) They have never been rude but I do feel uncomfortable in there sometimes.

Although I got my ring cleaned in Vegas once and the woman flat out asked me if it was a Tiffany's ring. I understand that they only clean their own but she could have waited to see for herself instead of asking me.

I don't get the idea of wearing a replica of something. Why drop the cash if you aren't going to actually wear or enjoy it? It's like buying a super expensive car but never ever driving it because it might get scratched so it never leaves the garage. It must be good to have so much money you can do stuff like that...

Exactly! Isn't that what insurance is for? I understand not wanting anything to happen to it but then what's the point in owning it?
• A friend of a friend (but I don't remember who) had a really big yellow diamond. They kept it in the safe and she wore a replica for everyday. Personally, I don't see the lure of pretty jewlery sitting in a safe, but whatever.

The woman wore the actual ring to an event one night, then left it on the bathroom cabinet when she got home. The next day she went jetskiing and lost her ring, but didn't freak because she thought it was just the replica (still a $1K or so fake).... when she got home, the replica was still where she had left it. The real one was at the bottom of the lake. She was screwed.

Just had to share.

one more reason not to have replicas... you get confused and then your diamond is at the bottom of a lake!
• If you've already been trying on rings, I would think that you would have a sense of how certain styles look on your hand. It's a very pretty ring, but except for the ginormous diamond on it, it isn't that different from other rings I have seen. It can't be too hard to find a jeweler with a ring with a diamond encrusted band for you to try on. Maybe I am missing some subtleties in the ring that make it really unique, but I don't see the big deal about not trying that specific ring on if it is a price tag you can afford.

I can't lie, that made me laugh a lot.

I could see getting a less pricey ring that you wear during high risk outtings, such as playing sports (or just take it off for an hour?) or while travelling. My sil/bil have what they call "Africa" wedding rings that they where when he is stationed over there but the second they come home it's back to the original rings.
• emartson, there are women who feel like they aren't dressed without bling. I am not one of those women, but I know a few.

I understand about travel to a high risk area, and having an alternate, plainer ring for those purposes. Hell, that's a smart idea. But having an exact replica is just weird to me.

True, but I guess I never imagine those type of people jetskiing. Or on a lake. They seem like the ones that would lay by the pool while their pool boy brought them another maitai.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: who would order a ring without trying it on?!!?!? : 3-5 carats is a huge difference in price, alone. Take into account that you also have cut, clarity, and color to factor in, and you have a limitless combination of factors. To give you an idea, a 3.24 carat diamond solitare is currently selling on ebay for $55,855.00US. You do get free shipping, though.

Ok. So I realize that no one else is still talking directly about the OP anymore, but I found this thread late and am going to continue to toss in my ten cents anyway.

In my previous post, I was saying that it didnt seem that different except for the size of it (and the girdle of diamonds around the big diamond), so being bored I went off to go see if I could find a similar ring.

For probably less than the cost of airfare to NYC, hotel and food for you and your FI, I found a similar ring on BlueNile. You could order the similar ring, try it on (get a CZ to put in where the diamond would be) and then you can use it as a replica ring if you wish. Or sell it on Ebay. Or just use it as your actual ring. Or tell me to shut up because you don't care. I'm easy late at night. Wink

Here's the link to the ring I found: http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-engagement-ring-setting-platinum_6217

OP- You are a moron. I feel bad for the sales person at Cartier. Ugh to be honest and though I've shown pictures of my ring I wouldn't say who designed it till now....Cartier. And NO it doesn't have a replica automatically made so you are throwing a tantrum about a non-existent replica. You can commission a replica to be created when ordering your ring (I did because I don't want to wear my ring on my honeymoon) but they aren't stocked. Also, if you knew anything about specific designers you would know that showing you something "like" what you pictured isn't always possible because there may be a small selection of that style at any of the stores. Cushion/oval diamonds are not stocked as much as the typical cuts such as RB and princess.

Ugh stop acting like an entitled brat.

ETA: Most stores that carry Cartier bands and Cartier salons/stores will not discuss pricing over the phone or via email. Standard policy for that type of business.
• You obviously know nothing about high end diamonds. The price of a ring depends on the diamond. Cartier does not stock hundreds of the exact same diamond. They are all different.

Cartier would also not ship a ring to an international boutique for someone to "try on". Do you have any idea how expensive it is to ship a package of that value? They are not just dropped off in a Fed Ex package.

High end boutiques are not backstocked with items in every size and especially not rare rings of which very few are made. I work for a high end designer and people always freak out if the purse they want to buy is on display. Well...we only receive 2 or 3 of each, so chances are the purse you are looking at is a last item. That's the way it is with luxury items. They are not a dime a dozen.

And I have to disagree with all those who say "if you have to ask, then you can't afford it." Very untrue. I rarely have a customer who doesn't ask the price. I get people with Black Amex all the time and they always ask the prices of things while looking and deciding. The ricj are usually very astute with their money, and they would DEFINITELY ask before purchasing a 3.5 carat ring.

But they would ask in person, and not over the phone. Real customers are shopping, not randomly calling for things to be shipped for them to try on. They know the ball park figure.

And before you hate on the salesperson, remember that she is not rich, and while you take 15 minutes of her time on the phone asking about a ring you have no intention of buying, her coworker could be selling $5000 to a real customer and earning commission.

And I have never heard of a replica coming with high end watches and rings in my life. And I have a Cartier Tank and a pretty nice ring. And I never tried it on until I was surprised with my proposal.

I agree. Wealthy people usually got that way because they were careful with their money, not by spending it all willy-nilly.

And FWIW, DH ordered my diamond and had the ring made without my involvement. So I never tried it on until the day he proposed.
• I'm with everyone else on this one. Firstly you should have a good idea of what looks good on your finger, you've obviously worn rings before. Also, if you've worn rings before you should know what style of band makes you most comfortable and you can always go and get your finger sized for fit....And I order rings all the time without trying them on (including my wedding band and his), because I know my style and sizes, jewel standards and I buy from trusted sources...The only ring that I've ever recieved that did not fit and needed to be sized was the one I got from my fiance and that was hugely expensive with no replica attached... As a person that operates a business it makes absolutely no financial sense to me to order high ticket items for customers with no guarentee of purchase.

ahhhhh... what a way to wake up! you ladies make me laugh.

obviously i have no idea what kind of rings others have ordered from designers but i can assure you that at a certain price point in Cartier as well as other designers, things do "automatically" come with a replica.

I know this because my SO's business partner has purchased several pieces from them for his wife and daughter. we had a conversation about it just last week. in fact he told me that one of the rings he bought didn't come with a replica so i can guess at what that price point is.

life i mentioned in previous posts, my SO has two watches that came with replicas so just because you've never heard of it, doesn't mean it isn't true.

anyways, you ladies have been very helpful and even more entertaining.

• I'm sure you can find something similar to that at a jewelry store. Just go and have a look. It's not that unique a style, it's just "Cartier"- so you'll pay 3x the price for the exact same stones/materials elsewhere, much like Tiffany.
