What are you reading?

I don't think we've had one of these very recently. I am almost done with my current book and i am unsure what to read next. Please tell me:

What are you currently reading?
What was the last book you read?
What's next on your reading agenda?

If you could give a brief synopsis and let me know whether you recommend them I'd appreciate it!

Re: What are you reading?

  • I read Maze Runner, which was really good. I'll probably read the next in the series this weekend. I'm going to watch this thread for more suggestions though too :)
  • What are you currently reading? World War Z It's supposed to be survivor's accounts of the zombie apocalypse. I was really impressed with the fact that the author described the way the world was taken back from the zombies and how governments and countries were rebuilt. I had heard about it for ages and I wish I had read it sooner.

What was the last book you read? Hunger Games It was an enjoyable quick read but it didn't wow me. I don't have much desire to read the sequels.

What's next on your reading agenda? I am waiting for the Virgin Cure to come out in June. It was recommended by someone in a previous thread but it's not out in the US yet. I read another book by the author and enjoyed it.

  • I haven't started a new book since my last, but I recently finished the Hunger Games series. I'm sure you've seen/heard enough to not need a description, but I liked them. I'm not sure how I feel about the ending of the series, but the books themselves were really good. I will probably start another series late this summer after the wedding.

  • Currently: 'Best Friends Forever' by Jennifer Weiner. It's pretty crappy IMO. Last read: i am really blanking but I think it was 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. Loved it. Next: The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides.

  • I used to participate in these all the time but unfortunately the only books I've been reading lately are my school books. I have to go back a few weeks to the last book I read for fun.

What are you currently reading? I just finished reading The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. I read it in high school and I still like it now.

What was the last book you read? Before that? The Summer Garden by Paullina Simons. It was pretty good. I definitely liked the two books that preceded it better, though. If the author had cut out like 200 pages it might have been better, it just dragged a lot.

What's next on your reading agenda? I have no idea. I won't be able to do any "fun" reading until May, and I think the first book I'm going to read is Insurgent, that's definitely the one I'm most looking forward to.

  • What are you currently reading? An Acceptable Time by Madeleine L'Engle and Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides (recommend both)
What was the last book you read? Many Waters by Madeleine L'Engle. I've been rereading the Wrinkle in Time series.
What's next on your reading agenda? Probably more Madeleine L'Engle books. I don't care if they're kids books, they're freaking good.

What was the last book you read? My Name is Memory it's by the girl who wrote the Traveling Pants books. If you've read Lauren Kate's Passion series, it's the same kind of thing, but way better writing.

I also recently read Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil. I don't know why I hadn't read it before. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect, but I didn't really expect it to be so funny, or so good. I really enjoyed it.

What's next on your reading agenda? Honolulu I've read one of this author's other books (Moloka'i) and really enjoyed it. Honolulu came highly recommended by someone, so I'm looking forward to it.

    Everything bold is clicky.
  • Currently: Wideacre by Philippa Gregory. It's the start of a trilogy. It's historical fiction set in England. I like it so far.

Past: A Discovery of Witches, which I loved. And The Shadow of the Wind by Carlos Ruiz Zafón, which, I liked, but it was a bit wordy at times.

  • I'm bored, so I'll play.

What are you currently reading? Fifty Shades of Grey. A friend of mine told me I had to read it and now I'm almost done with it, it's written pretty bad (IMO), a little too repetitive for my likings. But I'm sucked in of course.

What was the last book you read? I re-read Hunger Games. The first book was good, after that I kind of lost interest.

What's next on your reading agenda? I'm sure I'll have to read Fifty Shades Darker.

Aca- I couldn't even finish Best Friends Forever. I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks it's crappy. My SIL thought I was nuts.

  • What are you currently reading?
Second Glance by Jodi Picoult. I'm about 175 pages into it, and I'm not loving it. It's just very slow starting out and there are a lot of characters to keep track of. I'm hoping it picks up. There's even a statement from the NY Times saying how fast-paced it is.

What was the last book you read?
My Booky Wook by Russell Brand. It wasn't great. It was nice getting to know how he became a comedian and all that, but he's not that funny and it got pretty dull in most parts.

What's next on your reading agenda?
Chelsea, Chelsea, Bang, Bang by Chelsea Handler. I enjoyed My Horizontal Life and Are You There Vodka, It's Me Chelsea. They're quick, easy reads. I like to read autobiographies in between reading fiction. It keeps things interesting.

[QUOTE]What are you currently reading? I'm currently reading Mary Roach's "Stiff: The Curious Lives of Human Cadavers". Basically, it's a researched book about all the ways that cadavers have been used to further science/medicine throughout history, in a sort of conversational matter. I've really enjoyed it, it's fascinating to me. (Thanks Missy!) What was the last book you read? Chevy Stevens "Never Knowing". She's a Canadian novelist, and I love her writing style (I've read 2 of her books this year. This one is a psychological thriller/mystery about a woman who digs into your adoption to find her birth parents, and discovers her b. father was a terrible terrible man.... who has just found out she exists. It was excellent, if unrealistic. Stevens' novel "Still Missing" was even better. What's next on your reading agenda? I have a few on the shelf, we'll see what I grab. Probably either Laura Hillenbrand's "Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience and Redemption" or Lawrence Hill's "Any Known Blood"

Pirate if you liked Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil I highly recommend the City of Falling Angels by the same author. It's about Venice so i am a bit biased but I really enjoyed it.

Another book I read recently and want to mention is the Ritual which i also think was recommended on here. The first half is phenomenal and really creepy. At one point I was very glad I was reading it in public because it was freaking me out. Unfortunately the second half is only decent and not nearly as engrossing.

You're going to the Land of the Dead? Awesome.! (I kid, I kid.)

I'm attempting to read The Lotus Eaters (since like February) by Tatjana Soli. It's good, just not my preferred type of book so it's pretty slow going. The books I read before that were by David Morrel, First Blood and Creepers. Oh, and Clockwork Prince by Cassandra Clare.

Other than that, I'm either reading (editing) my own books or unpublished ones (not my own).

  • Mehg, you just reminded me that I have Booky Wook 2 sitting on my shelf. I love Russell Brand.

And Fifty Shades... I just don't think I can get over the poor writing and the fact that it was a fan fiction. There are so many free fan fictions out there of the same caliber, I just wouldn't see the point in buying it. But everyone keeps talking about it so much, I wonder if my curiosity will eventually win out.
