Backyard intruder (WARNING: disturbing insect photo)

Pretty sure I will need counseling after this. Found a pic of the type of beetle found in the backyard. Larget beetle in AZ. It was between 4-5 inches long. The cats were even afraid of this thing. Its called the Palo Verde Beetle.

  • Actually, I think that's kind of cool.
  • It was just in the back yard? Totally cool. As long as he doesn't want to move in to the spare bedroom.

  • Ha!  I'm with Lucky - it's a beetle.  I'd be slightly freaked by it, but mostly not.

Now... if it was a spider that big.  Holy god.

I wish I could be rational like that, I do. But I was stuck outside in 116 degree weather for an hour because this thing was close to the door - I refused to pass it to go inside. Pretty sure I would die from heat exhaustion before coming within 2 feet of this thing.
  • Nasty.  I hate bugs.

Haha, seriously. My sister said "You weigh 130 pounds. Its a BUG. Now stop being so afraid of something so much smaller than you." Yes, I know its silly. But I have an abnormal fear of roaches and beetles. Spiders? Totally fine.
  • I also live in Canada, and I have seen bugs that big all the time. Not that I'm really a fan, but I am also not terrified of them, but they do exist here too!

Oh man, I guess I'm the only one not freaking out?  Then again, I use to work in an insect rearing laboratory after college.

Now if it was a huge spider, different story!

THIS. OMFG, THIS. Spiders scare the crap out of me!

Watch out, those things will totally drink cokes and leave them on your windowsill.

One time at my families Florida house we found a spider in the kitchen so big you could see from a distance that it was hairy. My mother got the pool net and captured it but it still freaks me out to this day!
  • Aagghh... my sister and I have a scale for spiders.

    What is its diameter?
    Is it three dimensional?
    Does it have hair?

Okay, I have to stop now.  I'm getting freaked out.  I need to look at the beetle again.
  • ish... 4-5 inches!?!? I'd have problems with that too. I might even prefer scorpions over that thing...!
  • I hope you didn't kill it! Bugs don't bother me unless it's a roach, ew.
    image
  • What happened to it? You didn't kill it did you?!?!?
  • My sis relocated it to the front yard...she is much braver than me
  • Oh good! I mean, he's totally creepy and whatnot but pretty harmless. I feel guilty every time I suck a spider up with the vacuum even though they terrify me...
  • Haha, I'm the same way. As much as I hate bugs, I never want them to be killed. Unless of course...its a roach! Roaches multiply way too quickly if you just leave them. Eww, I have the heebie-jeebies now
  • We had one of these in my parent's back yard!  It died and was in the pool filter.  Probably about 5 inches, it was not my friend.
  • EW!!!!  I HATE bugs and I LOL'd at the part where you were stuck outside because it was near your door - that's exactly what I do!  We have nasty stinkbugs here, and if there's one upstairs, I sleep on the couch, but FI usually gets those for me.  He gets annoyed at me, but I can't help it I'm afraid of them.  Most other bugs, my kitty is my savior and he catches them.  I give him treats for saving his mommy lol.  It's ok if he eats them, but if FI gets them, I tell him to put it outside and not kill them, b/c then I feel bad, even though they're gross.  A big grasshopper got in the house last night and I almost fell over when it started flying, because bugs always find a way to get to me!  A stinkbug divebombed me when I was on the couch once and I about died.
