Tasty soft foods?

I lurk here a lot and have noticed that there are quite a few people who are good in the kitchen, so I figured this would be a good place to post this. I just got braces (2nd time in my life, and not the last, unfortunately) and my teeth are killing me. I am in dire need of recommendations for good soft foods, either recipes or something I can buy and just heat up. I am already tired of Campbell's soup. Thanks in advance, ladies =]

  • Cream of wheat, oatmeal, pasta, mashed potatoes, steamed vegetables (think, carrots?), stew.

Why do you have to keep getting braces?
  • I agree with the cream of wheat and mashed potatoes. You can add shredded cheddar to those (potatoes) for some protein and milk. Macaroni and cheese might be another good one, too.

And, honestly? When I've had food or mouth issues, I've bought baby food fruits and fruit/cereal mixes.

  • I had braces for the first time when I was in middle school. Never wore my retainer like an idiot. So I have them now. But my jaw structure is so bad and messed up that I have to have surgery on my jaw line after the wedding next year (when I have better insurance and more downtime), so I will be in braces before the surgery to realign my teeth, then have surgery, then have my jaw wired shut, followed by more braces after the wire comes off to realign/stabilize my teeth again.

Thanks ladies - I'm making a grocery list for tomorrow after work and you're helping quite a bit =]

  • baked sweet potatoes.

When I had braces I found that after they'd been adjusted the best thing to do was two shots of tequila. Then my mouth went numb and things were fine.
  • That just gave me chills. I would probably have a panic attack if I knew I was facing all of that. I damn near need a nerve pill to get a cavity filled.

  • Jas, that's my dad's father, a WWII vet. That was his bomber behind him - I think at the time he was stationed in the Phillipines. I love that photo of him. I have his browbone and I think his nose.

He developed lung cancer when I was in my senior year or so of high school and it progressed pretty rapidly. We all were together at Father's Day, and he was gone a week or so after that. My other 3 cousins didn't get to know him. The 2 oldest were 4 or 5 when he died, and the youngest was a year old? I feel privileged.

He's also the reason my parents named me what they did. They knew he'd call me that no matter what my name was, so they decided to use it. I got my love of Coke (with peanut butter "Poppa" crackers) from him. I'm babbling.

[QUOTE]Could you manage (at least now while your jaw is intact) soft cheeses (cheddar, swiss, brie?) I used to like to basically suck on bread until it just fell apart in my mouth. Avoid crusts. Or really soft muffins-would be a good way to get in your fruits.

I can manage soft things pretty well at the moment..for example, i just scraped cream off some oreos and was eating that, hah! But the bread idea is great, and so were your other suggestions...i'm excited to go to the grocery store tomorrow =]

HHAHAHA!!! That cracked me up!!! Although, it may be because I had braces in 7th grade...a little young to be shooting tequila, but that is what I saw in my mind!

I second the baked potato and sweet potato. Milkshakes. When I had my wisdom teeth out I would make milkshakes with coffee in the morning for breakfast. If you like to cook, there are a lot of recipes for "cream of" soups that would be perfect....one of my favs is a corn and summer squash chowder. It is pretty easy, the recipe is here: http://find.myrecipes.com/recipes/recipefinder.dyn?action=displayRecipe&recipe_id=10000002001877
  • Smoothies or Mott's fruit-flavored applesauce (I love the strawberry one)
  • Smoothies would be really good. Get some soy powder and add it to them to get some extra protein.

Do you have fondue set? Do it up with some nice soft bread?

  • SP, I'm really glad you posted this. I got braces over the summer and they just put my expander in a few weeks ago (I very narrowly escaped needing the exact same surgery). Since my appt yesterday my teeth have been killing me and I'm getting tired of soup too. This I hope your pain gets better soon. Smile

Haha this. I'm assuming you weren't in middle school, huh?

Sweetpea, I just had that surgery you speak of in June. I'm all un-swollen and just got my braces off two weeks ago! PM me if you ever want to talk about it. I know it's scary to think about but it wasn't too bad. (don't google blogs about it, holy shiitballs).

  • Oh, favorite soft foods--split pea soup with lots of ham, Greek yogurt, and refried beans topped with cheddar cheese and hot sauce.

  • Thanks for all the recommendations, ladies. My grocery list is full! =] I did find that mac and cheese is soft enough for me to eat this morning and I had it in the house, so that's lunch. Dinner will be purchased this evening!

Sco - glad to be of help..lucky you on escaping the surgery!! Hope your pain goes away as well.

MFJ - I may have to talk you up on that offer. I'm just avoiding thinking about it right now, cause it seriously makes me cry.

  • I had braces from 2007-2008, and after tightenings it was murder to eat anything. I would make sugar-free pudding or Jell-O and pour it into individual serving cups to divide it up.

I couldn't do smoothies, since just the act of causing suction in my mouth caused me pain. And I'm lactose intolerant, so milkshakes were out anyway.

Needless to say, I'd always drop like 5lbs after tightenings LOL.

Towards the end, I discovered a dish that I like to call baked potato casserole. I'd make mashed potatoes, then mix in butter, sour cream, cheddar cheese and chives, then put that in a baking dish and top it with a bit more cheese and bake it till it got golden brown. I'd live on that shiit for days.
